Jerry, I like that office display. I have my Garand and M1 Carbine hanging on the wall in my office. I've collected a little bit of WWII militaria over the last few years - ammo belt, canteens, bayonets - and I just bought a M1 Helmet (I haven't received it yet.)

I've been trying to think up a way to display it.

Knife7knut - thanks for the info. I will keep trying other .22 brands to see if I can get it to work with the normal velocity rounds, as the High Velocity rounds are a little pricier than normal velocity. But at least I now know one brand it will work with...

I figure this as good a time as any to report this.
I had a Ruger 22/45 that would only eat CCI MINI MAG reliably.
I was told to change the extractor. I used an aftermarket Volquartson (SP?).
It would eat pretty much anything after that.
Unfortuneatly I had to sell it better than a year ago.
You MIGHT see if there is an aftermarket extractor for your gun.....

Yes, I had considered replacing a few parts to see if that made any difference - then I found out that parts for the Browning Challenger II are scarce as hen's teeth. Numrich is out of stock on every part except one spring. I read on some forum that Browning sold all their remaining stock of parts to a gunsmith - and that he was about your only shot at finding parts (I think I even called him several years ago - with no luck).

There doesn't seem to be many common parts between the Challenger, Challenger II, and Challenger III.

I was able to buy a couple of aftermarket magazines for it, but that's about it.

This M37 belonged to one of my younger brothers who passed away last year; another of my younger brothers owns it now - I am putting it back in service for him. I sanded what was left of the finish off yesterday, stained it, and put a first coat of Tru-Oil on it. The metal is in good shape (other than being filthy coated in grime) - cleaned up to a mirror bore and the action will drop open now - was sticky before. I fashioned a new plug for it from a 6" piece of 1/2" oak dowel rod. We are having several spring like days, so I hope to use them to get it finished up. OH

I've got a Mitchell .22 pistol acts about the same way when I first got it it shot any round I put threw it--it's been back mid 90's I had issues with it--wanted to dump that gun many times--

That stock really cleaned up well! That's a special gun as it had been your younger brother's and is still in the family!
I've had several 37's over the years and really enjoyed shooting them. But the sad part is I traded each of them for something I thought wanted more and it comes back to haunt me when I see an Ithaca 37 . My personal favorite was a 16ga. that eventually turned itself into to an old 1895 Winchester carbine, 30/40 cal.
Now the trades have all been good but there is something about those old pumps that is just plumb sweet!
We found a like new 12ga. and gave it to our son for a graduation gift. He shoots left handed and it is ideal for him. Hopefully he won't be bit by the trading bug .

Old Hunter - it's good that you have been able to keep the M37 in the family.

I used Tru-Oil to re-do the stock on a Remington Model 58 a couple of years ago. (there are some pics somewhere in this thread). I put the first few coats on, rubbing it in with my fingers, letting it dry, and then sanding between coats with brass wool. It was a little more un-even than I liked, so I cut the Tru-Oil with mineral spirits for the last few coats, and it even everything out nicely. I now wish I had thinned it with mineral spirits for all of the coats.

I think I posted this one several pages back. It was an old 870 Wingmaster with a terrible finish. I finally got around to doing the parkerizing work on it this past weekend. Much better now I think.

TreeFarmer, I'm going to post a few pictures as I go along - put the second coat of Tru-Oil on this afternoon - letting it soak deep for a day, then steelwool and then some thinner coats (as recommended by Unk). Blue, your parkerizing job sure turned out nice! OH

Nice carries JB and Bob! Real sweet guns. Always enjoy seeing the pistol EDCs. Yes sir Bob, definite problem solver within 20 feet or so. Never want to be on the receiving end of that.

Thanks for the compliment Unk! I really like your display also. I thought about doing the same thing with my deer rifle my Dad and I made a stock for together. Just have not gotten around to it yet. The carbine and Garand are awesome. Like to own those at some point.

Nice work on the old 12 guage Blue! What a difference. I have some light rust from some drizzle on the deer rifle i mentioned earlier in this reply. Caused some tiny rust spots. Will have to deal with that at some point too. Not sure the best way to do it.

The son visited this weekend and his lady has never shot a pistol. So we drove out into the desert about a mile and shot a few rounds. I started her off with the old Colt Diamondback .38 then we moved up to the Governor with some .45 250 grain Long Colt loads. Actually the laser on the Governor helped her out quite a bit, first time shooting and all. Put the red dot on the can and pull the trigger. Seems the 250 grain .45 preferred to just tear the can rather than put a hole thru it most times. Here is one of the cans we shot, Pretty devastating round for sure...

zp4ja, I envy you guys in the desert. You can make some really long range rifle shots out there. I never really appreciated that until a recent trip we made to LV and the Grand Canyon. I visited a friend who lives in Kingman, AZ. I wouldn't mind living in that area for a while.

Worked the stock over with steel wool, knocking off the sheen from the first two coats, then hand rubbed the third coat of Tru-Oil into the wood this morning. It hit 80° this afternoon, so the stock has dried pretty well by this evening - took this picture an hour ago. I am going to let it finish drying until Friday, then reassemble the gun and go shoot it. OH

Thanks guys for all the compliments, this one was special and important to do right. It has been so warm the last three days that it is cured; I spent some time in the shed tonight, got it all back together and function checked with action proving dummies - all that remains is to live fire it (got to drive out of town to do that, maybe Friday). I think it needs a new recoil pad, the one on it is poorly fitted, but I'll let my brother make that call. OH

Long shots are the norm out here especially when hunting. As I have posted pics of our range, I will not post more but we go out to 400 yards on a nice facility. The 100 to 400 yards range has a road you can drive down or walk to put targets or spray paint on the steel plates. I would love to see the county put in an 800 yard range but I cannot complain since the facility is top notch and FREE!
Out behind one of the mountains close by, there are some private unofficial shoot offs at very long range. Maybe 20 minutes away from the house. Real flat and not much sagebrush and if it is there, it is low height. They take .50 cal Barrett and .338 Lapua Magnums out there and have private competitions from 1000 yards, 1500 yards and 1 mile.
I am trying to work up to 800 yards with the AR-10 308. It is right on at up to 400 yards at the point. At some point I would like to step up with the long range/larger caliber big boys, down the road.
Even the bolt action .50 cal Barrett I can get right now at 2000 to 2400 bucks at the hardware store, without the required optics that will cost at least twice that much for some quality glass. The semi autos .50 cal is like 8000 bucks, and at ~$7 per round, quite an expensive venture. The Lapua can run up to ~$5 or more per round. I may check into the Lapua instead. I am not some rich kid.
As far as the .50cal, expensive yes. But something about shooting a 600 to 800 grain projectile down range at 1000, 1500 or more yards, just sounds fun and challenging to me given the skill and factored variables to make a shot like that. Doesn't cost a dime to dream. Hopefully I will get there at some point or at least take a shot like that. Who knows.

Anyone here shoot .357 SIG rounds in any makers guns?

I have a SIG PRO 2340 that comes stock as a .40 cal but can barrel swap to a .357 using the same mags.

I know the .357 SIG can be an expensive and scarce round. Just interested in the experience with the round performance, not the maker of the gun used or ammo cost/availabilty.

Might buy that additional barrel for the 2340 I have or may buy another that can shoot both .40 and .357 SIG, or both options if I hear good things about the .357 round. I like guns that have ammo diversity options, kind of like my S&W Governor. Great revolver and takes three types of ammo. Same deal on the Colt snake guns, takes .38 special and .357.

I like commonly found ammo calibers mostly, especially NATO. But I like to have good performance guns and calibers also. Does me no good to have a gun with no ammo available. So I have many common but diverse calibers in my collection.

My new AR arrived yesterday. I don't have optics mounted yet, but I tested it this afternoon for function.
It's made by Rock River Arms. 6.8 SPC (II) caliber. Gonna be my deer rifle this year.

Between me and you, the Sig Round your are speaking of is all about money, There is NO Gain at all other than spending (3) time the money for a interesting round of ammo. I asked the same question to myself and many shooting partners prior to selecting the other capable calibers.

All said, Be comfortable with your own purchase, but IMHO man no disrespect folks, most are wasting good monies all the way around. Yes interesting ballistics, that said not even close to the KO Energy /Power of a real .357 magnum, though many associate the same.

IMO the round itself, looks Cool, offers not much in performance other than niche shooting, costs a fortune.
