GSP, how are the cacti doing now? I thought I read a few years ago that the giant cacti were dying off?
Our old barn is made from American Chestnut, and they don't (can't) make them like that anymore. It's interesting that American Chestnut trees still keep pushing up a hundred years later, but die before reaching a usable size.
that is interesting,

... One would think there would be some kind of chemical treatment for protection or even some way to alter the trees' genes to become resistant to the blight, as the trees in Asia are. My, OLD HUNTING BUDDY always used to talk about the great qualities of Chestnut trees and the wood and how the Indians relied on the chestnuts as important part of their diet (and frontiersmen too I reckon )

Fired up the Rincon and took a ride up the mountain, barely a trace of snow on Irons Mountain. Looks like it's snow still on Dan's Mountain near Frostburg, MD, though.

Looks like y'all have some fine locations to view the power-line R/W!
I mentioned earlier my grandson going to the woods on Thanksgiving morning and evening and seeing quite a few deer. After the family left on Friday I didn't have any desire to go to the woods that afternoon. Saturday morning I rode down in the woods and exchanged my SD cards and was surprised and pleased to see a big bodied 6 point on the camera that hadn't been seen before. Still didn't feel like hunting but around 3:30 it got the best of me and I went down to the shooting house just to see what was going on.
While I was getting all my junk laid out in the shooting house I noticed a deer way out in the pines beyond the green field, it was 3:38. Continued getting my worldly possessions arranged, flash light, cell phone, rifle, etc 3 deer came into the patch almost under the shooting house. A few minutes later several more entered the patch, all coming from the west. All of a sudden, they all wheeled around looking at the trail they came in on. Out walks the 6 point, maybe 75 feet away. Never touched my rifle, just watched them as they all moved to the east. The buck spotted the deer in the pines and walked towards her. While all this was going on 4 small bucks, 3 spikes and a little fork horn entered the green field, they played around, browsed and work their way east also. Deer, mommas and fawns, kept coming in from the west and in all there were 21 passed by me that afternoon. I left the stand at about 4:50 as it was very cloudy and dark. A great hunt, no deer to dress in the dark.
Here is a picture of a few of the deer in the plot that afternoon:
That morning I got these game camera pictures from the same field:

- The 8 point that has been around most of the summer.

- 1st time seeing this 6 point.

- The deer that has the funny shaped rack.

- These fellers will be hard at it when the rut gets under way next month.
Muzzleloading starts tomorrow, not too interested in that right now but on the 13th it's back to rifle season maybe I'll be a bit more enthused by the.

Nice shots, tree.
The power line divides the farm property in half, from the foot of Irons Mt. to almost the top. Roughly 200 acres southeast of Cumberland. There are several hunting huts that the guys who help out at the farm use. I haven't had a chance to talk to them to see how rifle season, which started here on Saturday, is going for them.

Nice pictures as always. Always enjoy going to Arizona to see the older kids and seeing all the cactus. I am so a bit envious of all of you who get to hunt wild birds.
Only birds too hunt here anymore are club birds. Once upon a time I would wait for the snow to go out and track the wild Pheasants. I did get out yesterday. Had the club put out 4 birds for and I managed to track down a leftover. Perfect day for tracking and I shot much better than I normally do. Changed over to Improved cylinder yesterday. When I shoot the over under I shoot improved first modified second. Was shooting Modified cylinder last year in the Benelli. Destroyed a couple of Birds. That is why I changed for yesterday.

Great pictures and post Steve . A good friend was in Peoria last week doing the same thing on a pay to hunt farm . They seem to be the thing down by you . We still have many pheasant and partridge in the “ wild “ so to speak. Not uncommon to see them cruising along back country roads . Several times this year walking out to bow hunt would kick up a partridge or pheasant.
The Benelli shotgun was our father’s favorite bird gun . Man he could drop them birds with that old shotgun.
Stay warm down there
Thank you JP
You guys have Grouse up there also? I hear those are fun and hard to shoot. I have never deer hunted. I enjoy walking would love to try my hand at Grouse hope you have a great weekend.

He dropped a little more than just his opinion!!!

....

... and the truth be told ...

I need to spend some time practicing at the trap and skeet range ...

I sure am scaring a lot of birds... but NOT putting too many on the table...

Hey GSPTD
The picture I posted last week of the 5 pheasant in one day. I must have been shooting out of my mind.
I know I paid for 30 birds last year. I know I didn’t see all 30 with no dog. I think I only killed 5. I have hunted with people in the past who seem to hit everything. I prefer to scare mine too death that way I don’t have to worry about breaking my teeth. Or worse my bride breaking her tooth. I am very streaky when I shoot 0-5,10 or last week 5-6 not sure if it was the same hen that I shot at twice but the second I got. I still blame it on being lefty and shooting right handed guns. I know that only partially applies to the O/U. Bought the Benelli ethos and have not changed the safety or camber.
