Haven't figured out how many points this deer had, there are stickers going several directions. The rack is really weird, maybe 8 inches wide. I will measure it and compare it to another normal rack when I get ready to quarter him up. Had this deer on camera last year with the same configuration, just not as tall.

Excellent sir, I don't know what a good or bad buck is but he looks fine to me.

What is the table fare of whitetail like compared to other deer species you have?

All bucks are good, I suppose we get carried away thinking about big horns (antlers, to be correct) and say a good buck has a big rack.

In our part of creation there is only one species of wild deer, the Whitetail. I suppose there are some "game farms/high fence clubs" that have other varieties of deer and down in the Gulf, I believe St George Island has imported critters.
Table fare depends on handling, processing and cooking. Lots of arguments and debates about how aging, removing silver skin, connective tissue, glands, even how it is cut up. Some processors saw a hind quarter like a beef, making round steaks with bone in, etc. We do what is called muscle boning, all bone removed and muscles separated before slicing or leave whole for a roast. Personally I believe most folks cook certain cuts too long and it becomes difficult to eat.
Venison has been our choice of red meat for many years.

My wife and I have seen this black bobcat running around behind our house several times over the last month or so. He's a big sucker - you can't really tell from the pictures, but he looks to be about 2 feet tall at the shoulders. Several of my neighbors have seen him as well. We have a healthy population of them around here - I catch pictures of them (normal colored ones) on my game cameras pretty much every time I gather the cards. But I didn't even know there was such a thing as a black bobcat until we saw this one. They do exist, but are supposed to be pretty rare.

Now that is what we call a BooBoo kitty in our house. Not that I would want that big cat in my house.

He looks like a little bear, and probably just as cuddly.

Thank you for the reply.

I suppose that I am lucky in that we have four species in my state, all are distinctive but as you say it's how the meat is cared for that really makes the difference.

Had an interesting "hunt" this morning while drinking my coffee and watching the Fox news. About 6:30 I noticed a doe eating acorns in the front yard, she was soon joined by 4 or 5 other does and yearlings and few seconds later a decent 8 point. Got my rifle out of the utility room and carefully opened the front door and the glass storm door, eased out on the porch where the screen door was propped open and let the .243 do its' work.
My school teacher daughter asked me tonight, "Do you think Momma would have approved?"

Miss Joy didn't want me to kill any does on our place but she never said anything about hunting on the front porch.

Here's a couple of more pics of the black bobcat I took through window on the back door on 2 different days. He is at least 50 yards away from me in both of these shots. In the one where he is sitting under the deer feeder - that is the same deer feeder in the video I posted a few months ago (in this thread, I think) showing a different bobcat catching a squirrel.

Y'all look like it's cold down yonder on Lake Tarpon in Pinellas County! Those grands must be tough!
When we lived down in central Florida, Speckled Perch or "specks" were great sport on ultralight tackle, 4 pound line and little homemade jigs. Up here in the Panhandle folks refer to them as crappies. I've hear a bunch of other names from different part of the country. They are fine tasting fish.

One of my favorite memories is fishing with my dad on Lake Jessup, trolling for specks. We would rent an old cypress boat at Black Hammock fish camp for one dollar, brought our own little outboard motor and somehow he knew where to troll with tiny, little Mirrorlures and catch a mess to eat. That memory is over 70 years old.

Hope all of you are well.

Went to snowcat/ winter survival training in Heber City, Utah this week. No classroom, all outdoors. Recertification every 2 years. Paid work trip/ break. Snowcat, fire starting, shelter building, avalanche beacon, track repair, more snowcat through the woods. Beautiful country.
No snow until I arrived. 2 nights straight. Hip deep snow in some areas, no bare ground, measured by stepping out of the snowcats and "potholing" to the tundra. There was 5 cats shared. Awesome trip.
