Two very good video's on 22 rimfire ammo - thanks Jerry.

Wade, nice rifles pard, original Marlins are solid guns - enjoy! I inherited a few Marlins recently, a couple of bolt guns in .22WMR and a levergun in .22LR.

Pig, royal, I don't disagree. Truth be told I'd rather have old Lyman peep sights. But ATS just how we found it.

OH, I'd give my eye teeth and maybe a couple extra for a Marlin 39a. You're right, the old JM Marlins were solid old workhorses. I think they're just now starting to be appreciated in the market, prices have steadily been going up for a while now on them.

If you've never shot one of these little Marlin .357 model 1894 rifles, you really need to. This is more fun than a .22 any day. It doesn't matter whether you're shooting .38 specials or .357's it sounds like a pop gun, but is some kind of deadly. I was shooting this afternoon at a wild cherry limb that'd fallen over in a storm. I was using some .38 special 158 gr LRN loads that I had around the house and oh man. Little hole in the limb, big hole out of the limb. No recoil, little noise, silky smooth, and "akrat".

These things are a hoot. I can't wait for the opossum/coon invasion when the sweet corn starts coming in. Exploding coon ought to be fun to watch!

10 dots, perhaps a bad choice of words on my part. We be over run with coons, opossums, and coyotes. While the kill is never an enjoyable thing in and of itself. The erratic action of the pest problem is.

If The Duke was fighting to see the front and rear sights AND the target like I do, I'd bet he'd have welcomed a scope.

Hey, I don't know enough about rifle shooting to be an expert one way or another. All I know is I need any and all help I can get.

Personally, I'm a thinking for woods hunting a red dot sho would be nice. I hear they're the truck out to 100 yards.

Readin' about the eye sight issue, I have to agree with the statements that indicate we need all the help we can get , especially when hunting, we owe it to the critters we hunt ::nod:: . I'll be 68 in a few months and I'm not able to focus iron sights like I did back in the Old Corps. I killed my first 2 bucks with a shotgun when I was 20 years old, an old double barreled 12 ga. Those 2 deer were the only ones killed without a scope. I started very early finding out how much more could be seen through a scope than with iron sights. Wish I had kept score of how many I've been blessed to take over the years but I lost count. Even the muzzle loaders I've hunted with over the years have been scoped. Nothin' beats a big ol' 50 mm objective lens lookin' down into those planted pines late in the afternoon ::tu:: .

I'm aware of the pin hole glasses but that appears to be best for punching holes in paper.

I should clarify that I'm not against scopes. Heck, I have a better scope on my
Ruger 10/22 than my Rem. 30/06! But, I quit deer hunting years ago.

It's just that some longguns.. .. ... well, to each their own ::handshake::

While I don't have a scope on my Win. '94, I do have an old Leupold scope mount for it and a Leupold long eye relief scope in case I want to add one to it.

In the attached article, Jeff Cooper and Chuck Hawks didn't have any issues with adding a scope to lever guns. I do agree that it does somewhat "ruin the lines" of the gun - but, depending on the usage, a scope would make the gun a lot more "user friendly". Especially for those of us over 50. :)

I agree with you Royal; on my Garand and A303 I have the issue peeps - they get shot at the range using M2 Ball. My hunting rifles wear scopes (except the WIN 94 - it wears a Redfield receiver sight). OH

I have a Winchester 94 with a scope on it. It was on there when I bought the rifle. The scope got ruined in the flood of '06 but I haven't taken it off (I broke the little crosshair wires trying to clean the scope inside). ::dang:: ::dang::

Here's my latest treasure! It's a pre war (1943 actually) Ithaca 37 16 gauge (the gauge of choice for any proper southern gentleman, right OH?). I've wanted one of these pre wars for a long time and luckily I found a gunbroker seller in KY with a nifty little layaway program! It's significantly hindered my knife accumulating, but I'm tickled.

The pre wars differed from their newer brethren by a smaller checkered fore end, higher levels of polishing and a deeper blue (the metal feels like glass), a polished top of the receiver instead of the mat that appeared after the war, and a different hand checkering pattern.

There are some finger prints showing in the photos, I couldn't wait to get pics. The blueing is next to perfect, there are only the faintest of marks on the mag tube from being pumped, no full lines, the slide arm only has one tiny spot of wear, and the wood is perfect. His gun hasn't been used!

And some one long ago installed a poly-choke. But that's fine by me, they plain work and work well in the field. I'm plumb tickled!
