Here's an interesting article I read yesterday - after 30 years in the field, it looks like the Army is getting ready to replace the Beretta M9. Seems they want something harder hitting than a 9mm. Most of the stuff I read says that modern expanding 9mm ammunition is as effective as .45 ACP. However, in the military I believe they use FMJ / non hollow point ammo. It will be interesting to see what they decide on.

I wonder what they are going to do with all those old M9s? It would be nice if they made them available to the people who actually paid for them - like they did with 1903s, M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, and 1911s. Somehow I don't see that happening nowadays.

I'm gonna make two posts on here today but the first is in ref. to .22 ammo.

My youngest daughter and I just reunited in February after a 16 year separation when she did a web search for me.

On Mothers Day I gave her a card and a SAK and she said "best Mothers Day gift ever !"

She recently researched and bought her first handgun...in N.J. She picked a Ruger SR 22, but was only able to buy 3 boxes of ammo @ $5 per. I went to Dick's for something and decided to check the ammo supply while there. After three trips around the isle a young lady behind the counter asked what I was looking for. ".380 & .22 " She said they didn't have either, but motioned me closer, put her finger to her lips and whispered that .22 was coming in on that Friday but didn't know what. Friday A.M. I was waiting in line for the store to open with about ten other old pruners, hoping to get three more boxes, or maybe even a brick. The store had received two whole skids of .22. One guy even took a pic of it with his phone !

Last weekend for her 34th. birthday I gave my daughter a plastic ammo box with 2000 rounds of Winchester M-22. She said " best Birthday gift ever !"

I got a great new S.I.L. and two more granddaughters.

Second post here..rather than join another forum I'll see if you knife nuts can help with a gun question.

I visited a friend yesterday who offered me what he said was a 1911 Gold Cup National Match, previously owned, accurized and shot competively by the previous owner while in the military stationed in Germany. I have no photos and will describe as best I can from memory. The left side of the polished and blued slide reads Colt MK IV Series 70 National Match. Does not read " Gold Cup." It has a mat finish flat top with longitudinal serrations and Elliason rear sight.

The frame has a flat finish, serrated back strap, checkered front strap, and on the right side a serial no. 4xxxNM This indicates to me 1959 production for the frame which does not match the Series 70 on the slide. It also has a skeletonized trigger with adjustable over travel screw, walnut grips w/Colt medallions.

Condition is at least VG, maybe excellent.

I'm thinking assembled from parts and not factory production ? If I just wanted a shooter I could get a new 1911 for not much more than the asking price for this one. I might consider it if there was any chance of the collector value of it increasing in the future.

Unfortunately it is certain that as long as the current occupant remains in the White House these retired military firearms will not be made available for sale to the public. You may not be aware of him using his pen to sign an executive order forbidding the return of surplus military firearms to the U.S. This in effect has stopped the supply of surplus rifles, such as the M-1 Garand and other perfectly legal semi-automatic, low capacity, firearms (such as those you listed) that are continually being retired by NATO allies. This in turn is effectively killing the Civilian Marksmanship Program's sales of said firearms and driving up the prices of what inventory remains. I recently stopped by the CMP store in Anniston, AL and was shocked at how depleted the inventory is.

Very glad to hear of your reunion with your daughter! The bonus is she sounds like she is fond of guns and knives too! Wishing you and your family happiness on this great day!

As to the 1911, sounds like a great gun with some history. Although I want to pick one up, I have not done much research on 1911s so I am of no help. Besides my Dad's guns that are priceless to me, I personally don't really ever consider resale value since they will all be dispersed among my heirs. My only concern is do I have enough ammo! One can never have enough ammo.
Maybe ask your daughter what she thinks, buy that if you like it and leave it too her when you are gone. Just a thought...

Hi Mumbleypeg - yes, I am very familiar with him blocking the sale of surplus military firearms . I have a Garand and a Carbine, and am a member of the CMP. I have also seen the rise in cost and the dwindling supply of these fine old rifles on the CMP website the last few years.

That reminds me, I still need to buy a few more cans of that Greek ammo for the Garand.....while I still can.

The reason I was stopped there at Anniston was to pickup some of that Greek ammo for my Garand. Here's a picture I took while there. This was the service grade Garand M1C total inventory when I was there a couple of months ago. The racks are empty.

Speakin' of war babies. Just picked up this Remington made 1903-A3.
Made in 1943. The barrel is a pristine, never-issued, Remington from 5/1944. It is a replacement barrel, but I also have the original barrel from 7/43. I want to shoot it, and the original bore was a little dark.
The stock is an 'S' type, which is proper for this rifle, but the final inspector mark is FJA, Frank J. Atwood. Not sure he was at Remington. I think he was at Springfield. It even still has a visible ordnance department stamp, as well as the proof stamps.
I've been wanting one of these for a while now.

Have been wanting a combination rifle for some time now to take on the boat and to a couple cabins in 'non brown bear areas'. Seems I am always coming across ducks and ptarmigan late in the day so I finally grabbed a relatively inexpensive and lightweight combo gun to try out this fall. Won't be here for a week to ten days but looking forward to it.
Savage Model 24 in .223 / 20gua with 24" barrel and inexpensive bushnell 3X9. Most of our ground is brushy and broken up here in Southeast so it's rare to shoot more than 75-100yds for deer and most times more like 30-40yds. Hoping this will get the job done....

Blue, old Frank J. Atwood got around during WW-II; in my reference book he was the Ordnance Corps Inspector, at one time or the other during 1941-1944, for Ithaca, Remington (M11 & M31 Shotguns & their entire series of 03's - M1903, M1903A3, & M1903A4), Union Switch & Signal (M1911A1), National Postal Meter (M-1 Carbine), and Smith-Corona (M1903A3). Nice pickup Trevor and RBD!!!

I need to pick up a combo gun like that Trevor. That is a real looker and I like the chosen calibers. Seems pretty damn all purpose to me. I don't know how many times I have been out hunting with a rifle and it was also duck season at the time, and had ducks flush out of small puddles in places you would never expect them to be.

Nice ones RBD! What ever happened with the bipod adapter for the 6.8? Work well for you?

On another note, I saw these sign at the hardware store yesterday. They also make window stickers. My favorite is the "Nothing inside is worth dying for" sign. With "Castle Law enforced here" running a close second. I may have to pick a couple up.

Jerry, the bipod worked pretty well. I just recently bought a second adapter for my other AR-15. Funny thing though - I broke the first one. (I'm pretty rough on my gear). I got to looking at it closely, and instead of welding it together, it was staked. After some rough field testing, the bipod adapter came apart where it had been staked. I welded it together and ground the surface smooth and now it is better than new. I have a set of Harris bipods now that I can quickly switch between the two ARs and a Remington 700. If I weren't such a tightwad I'd by two more bipods!

I've had two Savage O/U combination guns since I was a boy. One a .22/.410; the other a .22wmag/20guage.

I had no idea Savage had produced that .223/20guage.

What a sweet piece that is.

I've owned a lot of those Savage combo's over the years they are nice guns that will take a beatin--I had one in a .22/20ga. that had shell holders in the end of the stock bought it brad spankin new in 87 for $89.00 on sale at William's Guns---I'd loose the scope and put a good Williams rear sight on it did that with two of mine-one of my favorite's was a 30-30/20ga. nice brush gun you could kill everything from birds to deer with that gun--bet I've owned at least dozen of them in all different combos they've gotten real desirable in the last 20+ yrs. for some reason--my all time favorite is a .22/410---

Looking forward to the range report on that one Monk. I haven't owned a Glock yet because they never really appealed to me much......but a few of them aren't looking too bad these days, hope that one shoots nice for you.

The Savage Model 24V Series D arrived last night. It's an over/under chambered in .223/20guage. It's in pretty nice overall condition for a used gun of it's age. The break open lever wasn't releasing the barrel like it should so I pulled the buttstock of and cleaned/lubed/inspected everything. The slightest adjustment to the break open mechanism and it's now opening like it should and still locking closed very tightly. Hoping to get it to the range in the next several days. The scope that was included is junk, not sure I will even install another one, may go with peep sights....or....don't laugh guys, maybe a red dot.... .... ..... . Most of my shooting is 35-90yards and the red dot would give nice long eye relief for shooting the 20guage....??
