Watching John Wayne spin-cock his Winchester reminds of a story.....

One of my best friend's Dad was a Police Officer (and later a Texas Ranger, killed in the line of duty). He pulled over a young man for speeding one time, and noticed the kid was missing a big hunk of his upper arm / bicep. He asked the guy - If you don't mind me asking, what happened to your arm? The kid replied - "Did you ever watch The Rifleman?"

I guess John Wayne and Chuck Connors could spin-cock with blanks and enlarged loop on the lever - but probably not recommended in real life. ::facepalm::

Seems like Henry Repeating Arms has been doing a lot of advertising lately. I saw the commercial on TV a couple of times last night and also on FaceBook.

Last week our Governor signed a Bill making the Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 our State's Official Rifle.....

"Alaska will now have an official state bolt-action rifle.

Gov. Sean Parnell this week signed legislation giving that distinction to the pre-1964 Winchester Model 70, in a range of calibers.

The bill, sponsored by Senate President Charlie Huggins, refers to the gun as the "rifleman's rifle." The bill says the gun helped Alaskans "establish a firm foothold" in the wilderness between 1930 and 1963."

Who's ready for deer season? Doesn't start for another 6 weeks or so around here, but I had to take ol' Bessie out for a warmup. This is a .50 caliber T/C Hawken, made from a kit in the 1980s. She can hurl a .490 diameter, 180 grain lead ball at around 1,800 ft/sec.
I shot six rounds, but I can only keep 'em in a six inch group at 50 yards. Bessie belonged to my Father-in-law until he passed on just over a year ago. He harvested many a whitetail with this rifle. This will be my first muzzle-loading season using this one.

Good luck on your muzzle loader hunt RBD.....always very satisfying to take game with a family gun.
Our season started a few days ago on 8/1 and runs to the end of the year, it's bucks only for the first six weeks and then any deer from 9/15 to 12/31. Every so often they extend the season to Jan 15th. We are allowed 6 deer total, 4 in this unit and 2 more if you hunt a neighboring unit. The deer in this area are small bodied so it takes a few of them to put much meat in the freezer. My first hunt of the season will be in a couple weeks but will have a gun and tags with me regularly while hiking or fishing.

Blue, I've been getting ready; loaded a couple boxes of my 308 WIN hunting load a few weeks back, got the brass ready to load up some 270 WIN. My muzzle-loader is an in-line (original, stainless T/C Encore) - I will get it out and check the zero in the next few weeks. I've got to get over to the farm and check and repair a few stands, need to move one and put one up that's been on a pallet in the warehouse a couple of years. Plenty to do, but slowly getting it done. OH

Trev, now that's what I call a deer season!
SC has six game zones, and many different start dates. In my zone (Zone 2), Bow only season runs Sep 15 - 30.
Muzzle loaders get to join in Oct 1-10, and then Rifle season runs from Oct 11-Jan1.

OH, this year during rifle season I'm using an AR platform in 6.8 SPC II. I am sooooooooo looking forward to it this year.

Florida has an interesting season in that there is some form of deer season going on this year from August 2 in zone A all the way through March 1 in zone D, that's 7 months of deer hunting. Zone A is in south Florida and D is in the panhandle west of Tallahassee. Archery is 1st, then provisions for muzzle loading/primitive weapons and of course general gun season. The rut moves northward from the 'glades and runs west along the gulf coast as the season progresses where we experience the rut in Jan. and Feb. in west Florida. Quite a contrast to some of the states that only have a few weeks each year.

In NC the long season is here in the east, very similar to what Blue has in SC, Archery from SEP 15 - OCT 3, Muzzleloader OCT 4 - OCT 17, Rifle OCT 19 - JAN 1. We start out with four tags statewide (two bucks, two does), and add two hunters choice in the east. I never use more than two tags anymore, have used up to five, but that's been a good six years. Something new this year is a separate black bear tag - an additional fee; used to be included in the standard big game license. That doesn't apply to me (or anyone with an old Lifetime license) - we are exempt from any new license requirements. OH

Refinished my Mossberg 151m (a) .22lr
Ordered a new peep sight to complete the rifle.
I'm really into old Mossberg .22 rifles and restoring them.

Mossberg, a highly under-rated gun maker.

They made a fabulous riot shotgun at one time. Not a Model 12 Winchester, but still a great compact pump action gun.

That .22 looks great. Neat Mannlicher stock.

Hi Camillus. Nice looking Mossberg!

Have you tried these guys - Havlin Sales? I have bought a few items from them, with good results.

http://www.havlinsales.com/22rifle.htm

I have an old Mossberg 340 KC bolt action that I bought from my neighbor for $20 when I was in High School - sometime back in the 1970s. I think it was made in the 1960s. I stuck a cheap little Bushnell scope on it, and it is fun to plink with.
