Well,don't know how I missed this thread for a year and a half, but what a good one it is!!! I only have two to show. S&M and A G Russell. The Russell is more tan than the photo shows

Recently knabbed a rare Paul Lone Wolf for less than half what they go for. The reason was damaged wood scales. The wood didn't do it for me anyway and bought it to get rid of them. No grain, anemic color, not my style. Fixed that issue with some Boone's Trading Co. Mammoth slabs. Don't know if they made any in Mammoth when they put this knife out, or how old it is, but here it is fresh off my bench. Ditched the pocket clip too.

Nice Job there may have been some made with Ivory Check out Arizona Custom Lone Wolf Knives . There all sold out but a few in Ivory

Thanks for the comments guys. Here's a couple picked up from two AAPK brothers. Big Monk's old 73 and Gunstock Barry's old 47. Great color on both and two of my favorites period. Love the pattern anyway and the tusk is thick icing on the cake. Thanks to Monk and Gunstock. Pinnacle of my pile.

Been awhile since we've seen any new Mammoth postings...I'll have to remedy that with this custom Vanderkolff swaybelly that I got lucky and won on eBay (for about half what the seller was asking).

Picked up another Lone Wolf Loveless "City Knife" with Mammoth Ivory handle (scrimshaw by Linda Laydon) to keep my first one company (tried to get a third in the series with a different scrimshaw scene, but the seller wanted $1,000 for it and would not budge, so I decided to let him keep it).

How fragile is Mammoth ivory? It looks like it would shatter if dropped on anything other than a feather bed. to the 10th power

Don't know the specs on the hardness chart, but I've carved Mammoth, Elephant, Warthog, and Walrus for decades. It's about the same hardness as bone or a medium hard wood like Oak, Ebony, or Hickory. Not going to shatter if you drop it but it will chip or crack like bone or wood if it's really abused. Look at what Elephants do with their ivory. They dig water holes, push over trees, and the bulls fight with them just like antler bearing animals use their antlers to fight. They take a beating and usually hold up.

I've carved real old stuff, so old the minerals soaked clear though and it's all a different color than original. Cracked, broken, stained, chipped etc., some found on a beach in Alaska that was weathered for hundreds or thousands of years and was exposed. Still the same hardness, still took carving fine, still holding up and tough as it ever was. The cracks can be stabilized and like cracked up wood, it can still be used and will hold up. Like the dark brown one at the top with the face carved in it and the two others with faces of the same hue lower down about 3 o'clock, and about 4:30. This was the Alaska beach find. Looked like a piece of drift wood when found. Stained/mineralized all the way through for hundreds or thousands of years. Still holds up. Inside, it's stained and mineralized, but not compromised. Amazing stuff.
