Sunday evening, before our pastor started his sermon, he made an announcement to the congregation, he had just received a text from one of our young men, stating he had killed a monster buck. Late last night this was sent to our e-mail, what a buck, especially coming from Florida! Haven't heard any green measurement but he's going to make the Florida Buck Registry for sure. I know most states have bucks like this all the time, but this one is not an average Florida deer.
The rut is on in the panhandle!

I thought y'all might enjoy seein' that deer. That young man deserved that deer, he has been watching him for several years without settin' him on fire. He's a great young man, works for a gov't agency, he's an EMT/volunteer fireman, he's a new father, he's a bass singer in a southern gospel quartet, he really makes his parents proud! He really knows his deer huntin' and some of us ol' guys need to listen when he shares his secrets! I'd like to adopt him during deer season if he'd take me with him , the rest of the year we probably couldn't afford to feed him .

That's a heck of a deer, no matter where he was taken. To be harvested that far south makes him all the more impressive.

Here's another shot of me, my brothers, and my nephew at deer camp this past November. I am not actually pointing that KaBar at my brother's gut, it just looks that way in the pic!
We had a tripod set up and it took us about 10 attempts to get one shot that actually had us all in frame and looking the right direction. The annual group shot is a tradition, and is always a funny scene to orchestrate....((There was a time when there would actually be deer hanging in the pic too! ))

Nothing too exciting to post, but I like to keep this thread active!

Went on a little romp in the woods today, light snowfall, thought it would be a good opportunity to practice some wet weather fire building. Got 'er done.

Jerry, Thanks for shedding a little light on the situation...sheesh, what a motley looking crew! Maybe looked better in the dark. Then again that was taken after days of living in a cabin in the woods...

Scott, although I had some fatwood slivers in my kit, I did not have to use them in this scenario. I just cleaned off the snow with my boot, made a little "platform" of twigs on the ground to use as a base...then I used a half ball of Vaseline soaked cotton, and some dead twigs that were still suspended in the air as opposed to laying on the ground. I shaved the wet bark off the outside to get to the crispy dry center and made some shavings... built a tepee around the cotton ball and used a ferro rod to shed some sparks and she lit right up.
I could have kept adding bigger pieces and made a rager, but was short on time, so had to be satisfied with the smaller fire, still smelled great in the frosty cold woods.

This one had ""LOVIN" """ on his mind***( maybe ???? ) --when he and 5 does,decided they wanted to cross the road before the Chevy pick-up could pass*** didn't happin' !!!!!!! the ""ladies made it,but the buck met the Chevy at the same crossing point__________at the sametime !!!!!! ____didn't know the guy driving the truck,( lots of front end damage)-- but my neighbor was skinning this 7 point,150++ lb. buck for some jerky & sausage meat,after we brought him home !!!!!!___ The Ol' Boy,was in ""FULL RUT"" with his neck swoll up & really smellin' strong !!!!! He even had fresh tree bark on the rack,where he had been rubbing trees !!!______ the DNR says the rut is over,by tha' end of December ?? ___________later guys,Monk***

I'll agree with Scott, good eating there ! Road kill can be a mess and sometimes it is a pleasant surprise. We have salvaged several road killed deer and dressed 'em in the back of the maint. shop and then invited the big dogs from the main office for a venison fry. They never knew it was road kill .
I've had the misfortune of hitting 3 over the years and it ain't good on the vehicles!

If only that buck had listened to the gut and feathers boys and quit chasing those does in December he'd still be alive!
