All About Pocket Knives

This is not real old, (c. 1988) but it is very personal for me.
This is a barbeque apron given to me by Al Mar.
I stopped at his office one morning to pickup some knives and Al asked if I barbequed. I answered in the affirmative and he handed me this apron.

Al designed character on the apron.
Obviously it is a parody of a Special Forces soldier.
As I recall he made a remark something to the effect of, “One tour too many.”
Note the Al Mar chop on the beret.


For those who don’t know the back-story; Al was in Special Forces during Vietnam. I asked him one time if he was in country. He hummed and hawed and said, “Lets just say I never met an enemy I could write home about.” His way of telling me “Not officially.”

A few weeks ago I acquired this business envelope used by Charles Leonard Hardware of Petersburg, VA. The company had knives made on contract which were stamped C. Leonard.

Great knife Dave. Love the bone scales - lots of character. Is the other side as good? Having the envelope makes it doubly cool. Just curious - Did you acquire these together as a set or get one and then find the other?

Ken, the other side is just as good. Other than some peppering on the blades the knife is in awesome shape. I found the knife before acquiring the envelope. I actually found a second C. Leonard knife before coming across the envelope. The second knife isn't as nice as the first, but I like the bone on it too.

Dave, it is indeed as nice on the pile side. Nice bone on both of those knives in fact, and having the envelope too is icing on the cake.

Funny how things work out. I acquired an old Cattaraugus knife box a few years ago, that had the pattern number of the knives that came in it written on the box. Out of curiosity I researched to find out what knife matched that pattern. Then it took me two years to find and acquire one of those knives, just so I would have the knife that went with the box. Only another knife collector will understand that "logic"!

Ken, that's awesome you were able to find a knife for that box. Pay no mind to non-collectors that just don't get it. Having the box or the knife is one thing, but having both together as a set increases the cool factor exponentially. If that's not logical, then I don't know what is.

It sure does!

Rare knife! To have the box also is even more unusual. To see that $1.75 price on the box is great. What's the story on how you came to have both? Knife first, then box, or did you find both together?

Not only does it make perfect sense, not trying to find the knife to match the box makes absolutely no sense at all............to me at least.

I just recieved these from the 'bay today, and thought I would share for all the case collectors. These are 8x10 glossies and admats from 1976. According to the attached letter, they were to be sent to JC Penny stores to promote the brand. I thought they were pretty interesting, hope you do too!

What are "admats" and how were they used? They appear to be reverse printed.

Charlie, I am not exactly sure, but I believe they somehow pressed paper to "emboss" the imprint of the knife onto that paper. At least thats what I think they are for.

I believe they are used to print flyers and possibly catalogs. The printing process probably doesn't require a lot of pressure like older processes did and cost much less to produce than the old ones which were usually etched copper. I have some older copper plates that were used in newspaper printing(not knife related)and I believe Dimitri has a bunch of older knife plates. They would probably work to produce several hundred copies rather than the thousands normally printed with copper plates.

Thanks Ray. That makes sense. Simple, limited use, reversed printable images to be used by the local retailer, J. C. Penny in this case, for advertising purposes.
