So, on the "Man Card" thing.

Is that rifle Belgian or Japanese?

And, does it matter?

Inquiring minds want to know.

No, I just consider it as a good idea! Looks like the second fronm the right is a M4 Carbine with the A3 removable handle. I have a Bushmaster just like that. You probably know this but maybe others don't but just past the front sight a few inches where the OD of the barrel narrows is for mounting a M203 Grenade Launcher. Unfortunately, the ATF frowns upon that and restricted the ownership of such an "accessory" to these models of guns.

Nice collection of ARs you have going! Seriously contemplating a supressor for mine. Fairly easy to get if you qualify to buy a gun in the first place. Just takes quite a bit of time, government red tape and usual delay and all.

Jerry

BTW, nice rifle there Monk!

Back when I worked for our uncle, we referred to the whole weapon, M-16 + Grenade Launcher as a
M-203. As I didn't carry one, I didn't know any better. As I think back, I didn't know any better about a bunch of stuff. (Still don't)

Jerry, I've never been around a silencer before. I'm thinking about getting one for a .22 cal as I have several threaded .22 rifles and pistols. Are they quiet enough for shooting in a wooded 2 acre yard without the neighbors going ballistic? I hate having to go to the range every time I need some trigger time.

As far as the surpressor, sounds more PC than silencer to some but I don't give a rat behind about the liberals, I know little but I am doing research. here is waht I know...

1. Never shot one but I know guys that own them.
2. They do so not for stealth but that doen't hurt.
3. Use is mainly shorter range for the operator to not blow his ear drums out when wanting to hear prey without earplugs in. Some calibers have a rather "sharp" report sound that will slighty stun the guy holding the grip or stock depending on closed bolt versus semi auto, etc, also in addition to ringing ears. Anyone ever shot a 9mm or larger without ear plugs knows what I mean and my hearing is shot (no pun) as it is. I have.
4. Short range comment in point 3 is based on reduced projectile velocity based on the surpressor. I guess one could scope adjust if needed depending on bullet grain, drop, etc. I believe that is what helps the reduced decibels on a real surpressor. Not sure a 1 or 2 liter bottle like in the movies works as an alternative and has same noise supression but enhanced velocity reduction. Never tried it.
5. Cost $200 for the Fed permit last I checked and supressor cost. Different options as far as use. I need to check the federal regulations but when I checked a few sites that sell them, personal is match to one gun and serial number, LLC can be passed between company and estate can be shared between faimily. Just read brielfy so do hold not me to that but along those lines. But hey, coming from a site that sell them.

As usual, I give more info than asked for so to your question...

Depends on the terrain and your neighbors. I can say the 22 report is managable without hearing protection. My assumption would be greatly reduced as it has a way different report sound versus a 9MM as it is. More like a real loud whisper to me, not a crack if that makes sense.

As far as the terrain comment, I have some moron whom does construction with a shop adjacent to my property. His shop doors face away from me with a wood fence about 100 yards from his shop doors. I am out with the dogs when I hear this ahole say "Stop or I will will shoot" followed by a loud shot report that bounced off the wood fence to my property. So with slide gun exposed already tucked in my hip and protection/enforcer dog also at hip I venture over to where this idiot is realizing that it is not a cop chasing this criminal but this idiot yelling "Stop or I will will shoot" followed by testing his .22 nail gun for driving nails into framing. Needless to say, never happenned again.

Point being, echo and neighbor sensitivity are big factors to your question. If I end up getting one, I will report back but it will be for a larger caliber like a 9mm or 223. If you get one, please let me know. I know a member or two that have a 22 surpressor, maybe they will weigh in.

Back when working for our uncle I had many occasions to fire 50 cal machine guns. I fired so many rounds once, the barrel turned cherry red and was ruined for life. The sharp report of the 50 Cal got to where each burst just was painful. .45 cal sub machine gun is the same way. That is why my largest gun is a 9mm. Probably why I wear 2 hearing aids today. I've got 8 .22 cal weapons. For self defense, shot placement, for me, is real important. I've always got a .380 on me, and my little .22 Beretta Bobcat.
I'm rambling, good night.
Randy

Jerry, thanks for your imput.

I tried a "suppressed" Ruger 22 several years ago. As I recall the mechanical noises (striker, slide. etc.) were as loud or louder than the report. Reminded me of a loud air rifle.

i have had a lot of experience with 22 suppressors. make about the same sound as an easy snap of the fingers.
a couple of things to remember:
1. bolt action is a lot quieter than semi auto, no racking noise
2. subsonic ammo is a must (no sonic boom)
3. still hear target being hit (slap sound)
i've shot with folks about 20 feet from me and them not hear me or even turn their heads

My only experience is with a silencerco sparrow coupled with a Ruger 22/45 and subsonic .22 LR ammo. Unsupressed measured 140 DB and suppressed was about 80 DB.

Most people don't realize how much noise comes from the mechanism of a semi auto pistol.
The phoney silencers on TV omit that part.

So true ..... also unsilenced large caliber hand guns discharged in say, any small interior room, elevator, or car.
Wonder what that sounds like.
My buddy, years ago, discharged his hunting rifle through the roof of his old car.
He said the sound could not be described, and he thought the dust and dirt would never settle.

The rifle made by tactical solutions (based on ruger 10/22) shown at the link below is pretty quiet. This is an integral solution (i.e., the barrel is suppressed vs. having a bolt on suppressor). This is not as flexible as having a bolt on suppressor because a bolt on can be used with multiple firearms. Also the full barrel option is more difficult to clean. It is not much louder than an air rifle even with standard .22 ammo (~1200 fps), but it is not Hollywood movie quiet by any means.

http://www.tacticalsol.com/x-ring-serie ... ogue-stock

Below is an example of a bolt on suppressor that is a good option for a rimfire pistol such as sig sauer mosquito (note requires threaded barrel).

http://www.silencerco.com/products/sparrow-22/
http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductD ... arrel.aspx

Below is an example of a center fire rifle suppressor for 30 caliber rounds (e.g., .308). It will reduce sound to approximately an un-suppressed .22 with reduced recoil and muzzle flash. You will want a short barrel, probably 16 inches or less if you are thinking about using one of these.

http://www.gem-tech.com/store/pc/SANDSTORM-10p48.htm

In Texas, it costs $200 and takes up to one year (12 months) for BAFTE to issue a stamp for suppressors. Not all states allow suppressors. Also I believe a rifle barrel length shorter than 16 inches requires a BAFTE stamp.

Suppressors, in addition to making the sound of the firearm action more noticeable, will make you much more aware of ricochets.

Florida has recently allowed noise suppressors to be utilized while hunting. Apparently no permits or paper work is needed. Our Governor has been very instrumental in passing some great common sense legislation that is very pro 2nd Amendment! (I couldn't get the pdf file to open to find the date when it became law. :( )
