Wow! David, you are colder than Montana! We are at a balmy 7 F this morning, warmest in a week.
Yah but we only have about 3 inches of snow, how much do you guys have up there?

That is true, we have about a foot, my country neighbor is actually plowing it right now.

17 below zero yesterday and 24 below zero here in Sioux Falls this morning, actual air temps not wind chill. Fortunately no wind here this morning. One side benefit to this though, I picked up a frozen fudge turtle ice cream cake for my wife for Valentines Day yesterday and did not have to worry about it melting on the way home. lol In this area we are somewhat used to and prepared for this kind of weather. Feel sorry for all you poor folks in Texas who are neither.

I think all of Texas is going through rolling blackouts right now because of the low temps and the extra high electrical usage.
We're getting about 25 minutes on and 25 minutes off. Makes it hard to cook or keep the house at a constant temp. Is anyone
else going through this same thing right now?

I just read an article about the wind turbines freezing, a lot of Texas' power comes from those.

Your right there is a big windmill farm just west of my area and not too far up in Oklahoma is a huge array of them (over 40).
According to a May 2020 article I read Texas power breakdown is 34% Natural Gas, 32% Coal, 11% Nuclear, 17% Wind, 5% Natural Gas (other), and 1% Solar.

Temperature here is 4 degrees with 10 mph north wind. It stopped snowing though and the sun is shining. We got about 6 inches of snow by my estimate - haven't actually tried to measure but waded through it this morning when I went out to check the cows water - had to chop a hole in the ice. Water in creek is frozen over also.
We are having rolling blackouts here too David. Our power comes from an REA co-op but it's subject to the state power grid control. Blackout here started about 3:40 AM and power has been off and on several times since. Power is off about 45 minutes, on for 15. It's 60 degrees in the living room of our house and getting colder. The heat is not on long enough to hold its own. It could be worse though - at least so far we're not among the millions of Texans that have no power at all.
Wind turbines in West Texas are frozen up due to ice. Generating no power. Solar panels are covered by snow. Generating no power. Stupidity on display.

I'm on my cellphone, the power is off again. Your right Ken we've got the quilts and blankets out because the heater can't keep up with the power outages.

Temperature here now is 2 degrees. At 4 AM it was -3. Can't remember it ever being this cold in my lifetime. Lots of plants are not likely to survive.
Still having rolling blackouts since early yesterday with power on only 15 minutes every hour. Temperature inside the house is 58 now. Forecast is for more snow and possibly sleet starting late today into tomorrow. Worried we may lose electricity altogether.
This is a huge storm affecting most of Texas with ice and snow as far south as Houston and Corpus Christi.

Around 10degrees here in Grant County Indiana. Been out with the snow blower until my fingers got numb. Gonna warm up and then back at it, city plow hasn't been out yet or maybe the driver just quit. Thinkin that snow blower is the best investment I ever made, should have done that 10 years ago!

My brother that wintered over in Alaska in 2019 just sent me a text
"Just another spring day in Alaska, but of course we're in Texas. 14 degrees in Lufkin."

It's now 18 degrees here in my little slice of paradise. We have been through two ice storms over the past few days with the second one concluding last night. The weatherman says we can expect another round of winter by late tomorrow or perhaps early Thursday. Many of the homes in my county are without electricity at this time. The ice formed by freezing rain has taken down lots of trees and /or large limbs that have inflicted major damage to power lines. I've been very fortunate (blessed) that our power has remained on. One of my daughters is without power and has been since yesterday afternoon. My heart goes out to all the folks in Texas that are being hit so hard by this extreme winter weather.

Sorry to see you southern folks getting that brutally cold weather! Up here in the north weโre used to it especially this time of year (that doesnโt mean we like it).
We got 8-10 inches of snow last night and itโs currently 19 degrees (feels like 6 degrees with the wind chill). Spent an hour or so snow blowing the driveway and sidewalks. The older I get the less I like the winter.
The rolling blackouts make it tough to get through it. We purchased a backup generator years ago to keep the lights on and a few essentials when the ice storms knock out the power.
Stay warm and safe everyone!
Jeff

The temperature has warmed to the 20s but will get down into the single digits again tonight. Something froze in our water distribution plant so we are not only out of power most of the time but have no water. Tomorrow I start melting snow I guess. My power just came on for the 1st time since 1:30AM.
I am not sure who or when we gave control of our power systems over to Ercot, or even what Ercot is but I am holding them responsible for this mess. I theorize it is due to the tree huggers demanding the phasing out of our coal fired generating plants thus we do not have adequate energy in this extreme situation and same goes for summer time when we also have blackouts.
I expect to lose power again any minute now.

David, that sure is an interesting site, kinda pretty, from a distance.
We were down to 30 this morning with bright blue skies and now at 10 AM the clouds have returned and covered the sun, more rain coming. I can understand how folks get depressed in the winter not seeing the sun.
Hope and pray that the electrical issues can clear up in Texas and elsewhere.

We were at 35 F yesterday, which is not good coming from a week of below 0 and lots of snow. It begins to melt and create ice dams.

I was driving last evening in the single digit temps with 10" to 12" of snow on the ground. As I drove by a coal mine,I was looking over and watching the coal come from underground via a conveyor belt. I thought to myself how this country should never have to go through energy shortages and rolling blackouts. We have billions of tons of coal in reserve, the most reliable energy source around. Technological improvements have reduced emissions from power plants by nearly 50%, reclamation returns the land that is mined back to a usable state. Coal is a win win situation.

Another cold day in North Texas. They are forecasting that we will get above freezing
and stay there sometime tomorrow and by Monday we could have a daytime high of
61 degrees. Now that's more to my liking!
