Temperature is up to 21 degrees here. Our electricity which has been on a rolling blackout status (15 minutes an hour: since Monday morning) went off yesterday afternoon and stayed off. About 1 AM this morning it came on again and we were figuring on more off and on rolling black out. But so far it has stayed on since then.
The temperature inside the house was down to 52 degrees and continuing to drop gradually since the heat being on only 15 minutes an hour was losing ground. We were getting accustomed to the drill. Making a list of what we needed to get done the next time the power came on for 15 minutes before plunging us back into cold darkness! Make a pot of coffee. Heat a can of soup, etc.
We spent 45 minutes an hour like the Amish and 15 minutes an hour like a NASCAR pit crew!
Now as I'm typing this post we got a text message that we are under a "boil water" alert. Seems the chlorination apparatus at the water department froze up and failed. At least we have water - some places don't because the pumps froze.

I gathered up 4 five gallon buckets of snow yesterday (20 gallons of snow), and melted it down into 5 gallons of water. We then ran it through a coffee filter, and then boiled it for 5 minutes. Then dumped it all back into a 5 gallon bucket. I have a little camp shower with a rechargeable battery. The wife and I were able to take our first shower in 4 days.
The power finally stayed on all night last night, and we were finally able to get the whole house warmed up. We have a generator we were using during the rolling blackouts, so we were able to heat one small room, where we stayed. One thing we should have done is stored more water. Won't make that mistake again. We had stored some, but not a weeks worth. The water went off Monday evening and is still out, and no ETA on when it will be back on.
For perspective, It got down to -2 here, the second coldest on record for this area (it also got down to -2 in 1949), and the coldest in my lifetime, and I will be 60 this year. The only time it has gotten colder here was -8 in 1899, 122 years ago.
All in all, we are much luckier than a lot of folks. We were able to stay warm. Hopefully our water pipes won't be damaged when they get the water back on.

The snow is still on the ground, but the good news is it's forecasted be around 37 degrees today.
By next week we should see temps in the middle to upper 60's.

Iβm hearing stories on the news about people getting exorbitant electric bills. Curious to see what ours will be, especially since during this week the power has been off more than itβs been on!

We got in on the tail end of the big storm that dumped a LOT of snow in areas south and west of here. About 2-3 inches of heavy wet stuff here. Some of those poor people near Cheyenne WY got 25-30 inches. WOW !! This is our second snow on the robins this season.

There's blazed and unblazed trails all over the place in Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia, John. Come on down and we'll go hiking sometime. If you like something a little challenging I recommend Old Rag just off of the Appalachian Trail. A bud and I did it backwards a few years ago.
The pictures above were taken around Paris, VA on Rt. 17. There's a State Park trail system close by there as well.

Graupel? I was watching the weather one day last week and they used that term. I had to stop what I was doing to look it up and be sure. A very rare occurrence in central Indiana and I think maybe the first time I had ever experienced it? I was going to post pictures but they came out poorly. I thought it was hail or sleet.

We got hit with some good rain, but that the Lord none of the tornados and flooding that areas around us are experiencing.
This all happened within an hour after my great neighbors finished mowing and edging my yard today.
