At 0830 it is 19° outside in Greenville NC; we have 1" of sleet with 3"-4" of powdery snow on top - the snow is so dry all my bushes are standing straight up (that's good - maybe we'll keep our power-lines up!) I won't venture out, but all of our main roads in town and the US & major NC Highways were treated with a brine solution yesterday. I think my bungee/tarp mod on the hunting truck worked pretty good - but I've got nowhere to go, so we'll stay home. Those poor folks in Atlanta sure had a mess! OH

We here in Georgia, received around 2-3 inches yesterday. The snow started at around noon. As of last night the Governor had to issue a state of emergency. Thousands of people were stuck on the roads for an average of 7 hours trying to make their trip home from work that should have taken an hour or less. Others (hundreds) are STILL trying to make it home, still hundreds of others abandoned their cars on the highways and just started walking.

A friend of mine left his home around 1pm and drove 5 miles to the walmart. It took him 7 hours to make the trip back home. Luckily I live farther out in the country where people move a little slower and have truck loads of common sense. No problems at all for me but I stayed close to home. Slow and steady wins the snow race.

I will add that there was ZERO pretreating of the roads by the counties before and impossible after the grid lock started.

It has been like 1-2 million monkeys and one football, if you get my drift.

5° here at 0655, 1" of ice on all the roads (and main highways - DOT can handle the snow, but not ice?) Even Cherry Point MCAS and Camp Lejeune are closed - never heard of that happening before (for non-essential personnel - who ever heard of a non-essential Marine??) This storm is a butt kicker down east - going to stay home again and hope clears soon. I am thankful our heat plants are working well and my water is working - no pipes are frozen - looks like the builder did do something right after all! OH

Yeah but you can bet the troops are not laying around on their racks reading, sleeping, shooting the breeze or playing cards. Some bachelor Staff NCO has those Pvt's, PFC's & L/Cpl's field daying the barracks. Neither rain nor sleet nor gloom of night shall cut any slack for an enlisted Marine. Idle enlisted hands are the Devil's workshop. Nothing more dangerous than a PFC with nothing to do.

43 here today for a high! We're havin a heat wave!

This is a bit late, but this past Tuesday.......It iced and snowed in Birmingham.

I'm retired. I don't need to get out.

Sarah, however, was baby-sitting in Helena, south of town. She's had to spend two nights there. It took her six hours to drive to two different schools to collect the older girls and get them back to their house.

The father of that family, our youngest son, could not get home. He abandoned his truck and somehow managed to get to another relative's home. He got back home, with his truck, late Wednesday afternoon.

His wife, Anna, in her attempt to get home to her children, was blocked by a jack-knifed 18 wheeler on a bridge. She left her car and attempted the three mile trek home in 2-3 inches of snow and 19 degrees with 15 - 20 mph winds.

She fell not very far from her car and hurt her knee. Someone picked her up and let her off about a block from home. Knee still swollen.

Oldest son, in his attempt to get his five year old from school, was blocked and took refuge in a shelter about 8PM, having never gotten even close to the school.

The five year old was kept at the school with about sixteen other children overnight.

Russ finally picked him up Wednesday afternoon and came here. They were stopped about a mile away by wrecked and abandoned cars and walked the rest of the way.

Weather forecast called for the majority of this to be south of Birmingham. That was incorrect.

Also, significant accumulation was not predicted. That was also incorrect. We had been consistently below freezing since Sunday and they admitted they did not factor in the ground temp. Consequently, the first thing to occur was a sheet of glaze ice, then 2 - 3" of the white stuff.

Had the forecasts been correct, schools would not have opened on Tuesday. As it turned out, with businesses closing mid-afternoon, schools closing and parents and guardians attempting to get to them and no yellow bus services, plus the usual 1630 rush hour traffic on all the main arteries brought traffic to a standstill.

Then, the neighborhood roads and streets, basically untraveled most of the day, were covered in ice and snow and given the hills in B'ham, just getting to one's driveway was virtually impossible.

Those side roads were soon clogged with wrecked and abandoned vehicles.

I read that over 4500 Alabama school children were kept in their schools overnight.

Me, I sat at home, snug as a bug.

If I had still been working, I'd have been required to remain in the hospital Tuesday night and probably again Wednesday night.

What a mess! Well here today it's hovering round 32 still and a high of 36. I'll take that over single digits any day.

I guess one good thing about the snow is that I get to play with my snow-blower...this was just a dusting yesterday, but I'm not shoveling anymore! Let's see your machines guys...I know some of you must have some bigguns.

Hey Gino it looks like a good one on the way tonight and tomorrow. Up to a foot of snow with ice and freezing rain. That ought to screw things up for awhile.

No heated grips, but this things has paid for itself many times over. I've had it about 10 years now. I just don't think I could go back to shoveling again. It's raining and freezing here now Jerry, no cars on the streets. What a mess.

We had a light snow yerterday.
25 degrees this morning, forcast high 31 degrees today.
32 degrees tomorrow and snow.
Snow Friday, freezing rain Saturday.
37 degrees and showers forcast for Sunday, Yeah!

I am ready for summer!

Here ya go dog. Only 4.7" this time but it drifted and none of it ever goes away. It just keeps piling up. I don't even have a guess when we'll see the ground again.
