Monk, you spent your Sunday morning well! That buffalo horn is a real beauty, and that is the prettiest piece of cocobolo I've seen in a long time. Good job!

Quality is A+++___ locks up tight,no blade play_lock releases with ease__no shrinkage in the horn handles (I don't really know how old this knife is ???)__ bail is thick & strong__ the EN-9 carbon steel, has a real sharp edge, that I have not sharpened since I aquired the knife__seems to be a winner***

jerryd6818 wrote:Thanks Cutty. And that was taken with your Portable Mini Studio? It's actually a very good picture. I think it would benefit with a different back ground color but the brightness, contrast and focus are spot on. I lightened the picture up a skoosh and it helped a little bit but I think the red background is holding it back. Try the other background colors and see what you think.
I think as soon as the new credit card billing cycle rolls into town, I'm going to have to get one of those.
Yes Jerry, it was with the mini studio.
Here's one with the blue background. I don't really like either color but the black is the worst, IMO. Still working on getting the lighting angle right, and avoid a reflection of the camera, myself or my background in the bolsters, especially highly polished/new bolsters. It's fun to tinker with

I should probably take it outside, I may give it a try

Hey Cutty,
If the reflections bother you, cut up an old white pillow case and clothes pin it to the front of your light box.
Cut a small hole in the middle just big enough for the lens to go through. Leave the bottom unpinned so you can
reach in and position the knife. Works great

Natural outside lighting is still hard to beat. It isn't always possible during colder weather.

MY outdoor possibilities are very limited so yesterday I bought one of those light box set ups. Can't wait to try it.

It has been said that a dark background with brightly colored objects makes a picture really pop. I got to wondering what a black background with dark props would do. Every color other than black pops out, hopefully the knives provide more color than the props.

Ain't anything TOO wrong with those pics! MAYBE a little bit of contrast but I'm not even sure about that...

I think the first photo is exceptional. The darkness surrounding the knife make the pearl look very elegant. I like it a lot. Plus its a nice contrast to the light, color drenched pictures many of us are used to. A nice contrast IMO.

Very nice Russell. It's a personal preference but I think a black background makes for a classy picture. Good job. The props give it a lot of pizzazz.

Thanks for your opinions! It is good to know what works, or why something doesn't work. Plus it is just plain fun taking pics.
