All About Pocket Knives

Hello tongueriver , sitting here thinking about that corkscrew you mentioned , wonder if one could be partially turned out on a wood lathe , never tried anything like that before . There is such a thing as a lathe attachment for turning spirals , but I do not have one of them .

I think an engine lath would work best.

Like making threads on a round piece of wood.

Beautiful work Woodbutcher! I have a couple of wooden pocket knives;two normal size and another about 15" long closed.Don't know who made it;I bought it on e-Bay awhile back.Says,"Catawba Valley Knife Club"on the blade.

As for doing a jigged handle;I have made a couple replacement scales for knives I acquired of wood and the jigging is relatively easy to do.PM me if you like and I'll give you a run down on it.

Thanks for your post knife7knut , joney 143 posted a wood knife a few days back in response to one of my posts. Before that , I was beginning to think I was the only one out there that created any out of wood . I like the shape of the handles on the second one , as well as the blade in the first one you have posted pictures of ! And I will PM you concerning the jigging . I pretty well know how to do it , (" or I think I do ") , but I just can't seem to get my hands to work to create an even pattern or a staggered one for that matter . I also have a problem coming up with the proper tooling to do the job with . I have been attempting to do it with a router with various kinds of router bits , but there is just too much torque to be able to be consistent with it . I have been thinking about getting one of those high rpm dremal tools and try it with , that might be the ticket . I am looking forward to hear what your ideas are pertaining to this matter .

I am sure others here would like to see some photos from start to end on a WOODEN knife you make... We all are tool nuts in a way.

In regard to the jigging,if you do a search on here under,"Saving an oldie" I described the process with pictures.I did a Case Trapper recently using wood from a Dominican cigar box.Not sure what it was but it worked pretty readily.I am far from being a competent wood worker.
I wish my camera would take good closeups.Here is a picture of something I made several years ago for my vintage Pontiac Safari wagon:A hood ornament made of red oak,pine shim stock,and a piece of mystery wood(a wooden dowel I bought at the local hardware store.Not exactly on topic but it looks like a knife.It is actually a large version of the type of paintbrush I use in my work;a dagger striper.My avocation for the past 50 odd years has been a sign artist/pinstriper.

I would be glad to do that justold52 . No one has ever asked anything about the construction of them before . I do not have any going at the moment , but will be sure to do that for the forum when I begin another one .

As for your camera , some cameras have what is called a MARCO setting in the menu . I have a Sony digital camera that has the MARCO setting on it . If you have a Marco setting in your menu on the camera , all you have to do is set the setting to Marco , and you will then be able to take some good close up pictures with your camera .

Hi to all wooden folding knife makers,
I just found this site and am soo glad to see that there are others who make wooden folding knives. I have made about 500 in the last few years. I will get back on soon and send a few pics when I learn how. I will be glad to pass on my ways of making the parts if you want to P M me.

Just tried to enter pics of some of the wooden folders I mentioned yesterday. If the pics display OK you will see several different styles and different woods. I usually make a display case with each knife. The cases are made from many types of wood and each usually has one of my geometric inlays.
