It is stamped Napanoch, N.Y., the patent refers to the fact that what you have is a tool kit knife. At the opposite end of the blade there are various tools that snap in. That is why the pin comes through the bolster at that end, to give it more strength.
For an example go to the tool kit thread here in knife lore

thanks MB! That makes sense now about the pin and the strange backspring config. Sometimes the obvious isnt so obvious to me. Too bad I dont have the toolkit

Here is an add from Popular mechanics published in 1906 showing this knife and the tool kit. Google books for the win!

Here are two old Jack Knife Ben cattle knives contracted from Napanoch, you can tell by the punch blade. One is tang stamped PAT. APPLIED FOR and the other has PAT'D 4/7/08.

Just in case, that is a real nice example of an early Jack Knife Ben. If the punch blade is double fluted I would bet it was made by Napanoch or Winchester.

Thanks MB, JKB , and Paul !! The craftsmanship of this knife is just amazing. Whether is a Nappy or a Winchester Im really not sure. I thought it is Napanoch ,sorry if I got off track with the thread if its not. All opinions are welcome, for sure! Here is a pic of the fluted punch ,and its twin made by schrade with JKB stamp. Maybe it will give a clue to the age of the knife in question ????

Your Nappy has JACK KNIFE BEN CHICAGO and UNION STOCK YARDS on the master and spey blade making that a 100 year old knife. The Schrade probably has JACK KNIFE BEN CHICAGO on the master and UNION STOCK YARDS on the spey making it a 1920-1930 knife.

Lots of great pictures and knives in this thread. I've been looking around for more pictures of Napanoch knives.
Here's a banana knife by Napanoch. It's 5 1/4 closed and the scales are a little darker than my phone pics although the pile side has a slight red tint to it. There are some opening/closing marks on the pile side of the blade due to the blade being slightly off center.

Thanks for posting that JACKNIFEBEN. Before I bought mine I came on here and found yours in another thread, and it helped me decide on pulling the trigger.

HEY Guys, thought I would post my Winchester/Nap harness jack in this section,,,,Since it was MORE Nap than Winchester.
Loved My HARNESS Jack by Winchester/Nap. Patented Punch by Nap and its in ANY BOOK under Winchester as per Pattern#. Just sold this knife the other day to a friend. This was a 1920 model made transitional piece. Lots more NAP than Winchester,,,It was VERY BEEFY w/ All steel construction
AND Who could forget seeing this Beauty I had on ebay last week,,Didnt last long. I think this Nap Dog Leg w/ Pattern# was very cool indeed & Super Rare in that condition!!!
Kind Regards
Mark
