They were used to cut the blocks for bullet molds.

Here are 2 45-70-405 rounds on the left, 4 45-90-405 rounds, a 30-40 USG ( Krag ) and a 30-06.


Same bunch as above with the addition of a 450 B.P.E ( Black Powder Express ) which is almost identical to the 45-120 Sharps Straight side. (got one of them around here some damn where and a 50-140 Sharps Straight Side)

I like the box of caps willie. Here is one of my better artifact finds. Found it a few years ago with my metal detector on the side of a hill close to a historic period Indian village. The serpant side plate and ram rod ferrell were within 50 feet of the lock.

Nope, and believe me when I say I combed the area for 3 days. My guess is an Indian had it in a pouch and it tore open as he was riding up the side of that hill because the lock, side plate, ferrell and lock screws were all in a straight line row like they just kept falling out of the bag one at a time. Found some metal arrow points and other period items 1/2 mile away.

big difference with back east an here...you guys have ground cover...we have rocks an dirt...things get sun baked..not buried.

Dang Willie! Next time you're up here in MO. bring a few of those along if you want to part with them. I'm looking to fill up a new bullet box for the wall of the store! Those sure would look nice in it!

Only thing I've got right now is all more modern stuff to put in it when I get it hung on the wall....

Love that double barrel Bob! Yes , that lock had a fox in a circle and I believe (as memory serves) it was Belgium made cirrca 1840. I had all that info researched and my computer crashed a couple of years ago and I lost it all. When I recovered it, it made my day for sure.

Bob, I've had two Sharps rifles, one in 45 X 3 1/4 (45-120) Straight side and a 50 X 3 1/4 (50-140)Straight Side. Both of them were some seriously kicking bastards unless you loaded them down to 45-70 or 50-90 spec. Those long cases do not do well with reduced loads and they aren't worth a damn with smokeless powders unless you use an over powder wad to keep the powder down by the primer. If you don't then ignition can get really flaky. Then you've got all that air space behind the bullet and the wad has to be figured into the projectile weight. It gets silly.

From what I've heard from other guys that shoot 'em, the 40 bottle neck Sharps is a great load for those rifles.

Main advantage to a straight side case is that you don't have to re-size the cases if you are shooting them from the same gun all the time. That may hold true with the bottle necks as well. I always used paper patched bullets in mine so it was a hand fit after repriming and stoking the charcoal in the case. My experiments with smokeless powder didn't pan out so I burned FF exclusively after that fiasco.

Gunsmoke, that is a DAMN neat find! About 20 years ago I was plowing some pasture up in Jack County near the Wise County line. That ground had never been plowed and I was pulling a big chisel plow. I'd have to stop pretty regular and clean the crap that was hung up in the plow. I found a Colt 1851 Navy mixed up in the mess. It was rusted shut and about half the cylinder was missing. It was still loaded and capped on the side that hadn't rusted off. It was my plan to keep it, but the land owner saw me messing with it and claimed it as his prize. He drove up at the wrong time and he came in from a direction that I couldn't hear him as the tractor was running. The bastard. LOL

I've got a 44 cal slug I found up there that I'll get some pics of. Found a couple of metate stones that I did keep. They're down at dad's place. Used to have several coffee can of points and stuff I'd gathered of that pink conglomerate flint. They went the way of the wild goose at some point in the past. The main quarry for that flint was on the ranch next to where I was plowing. The ground around that place is paved with chips from where they whacked chunks off some BIG old flint rocks about the size of car. DOG only knows how big they were before they wore 'em down and hauled off the pieces. Found a Yankee enlisted man's tunic button out there too. I'll try to remember where I stashed that damn thing. LOL

That stuff above is the tip of the junkberg. I used to have a HELL of a lot more, but I pooped it off over the years.

Here's some poor pics of an early Harry Pope barreled German single shot in 32-40. It was meant to be loaded with R.E.A.L ( rifling engraved at loading ) bullets. In toher words, you put the cartridge in the breech and shoved the bullet down the barrel to meet the cartridge. The false muzzle, palm rest, and bullet mold are missing from this one. Dammit.

Here's a couple I picked up off a Friend today.....First is a Taurus 38 SPL...She's pretty clean. ...second is a 1907 Savage 32 ACP..cool old gun.

I was in a pawnshop recently and they had a youth 20 guage, single shot.
It wasn’t much more than about 3 feet long. Nice lightweight, small; I figured it would be good for home defense. It won’t shoot through a perp, 2 walls and then take out the neighbor with a single round. I was really tempted……….. but I resisted.

Dale....my Father has a 20 gauge double barrel like that. ....its like a stagecoach gun...really cool.

I love those old Savage Arms .32 autos. I've owned several over the years. I thought they had an interesting mechanism.

Is the pistol marked Savage? I notice the grips are maked "FN", which I take to mean "Fabrique Nationale". That might not be spelled correctly.
