No problem.

When I am trying to save the handles I will use try to gently tap the pins out of the handles from the inside of the liner.
It is harder with a pinned shield, but I have been able to do it if the bone is not too fractured.

I use a micarta block with a small (3/16" or 1/4") hole in it. The block helps support the bone when I tap the pin back out & into the hole. It just helps minimize any flex in the bone and prevent cracking.

That is the method I use.

Yeah. If I really wanted to save the scale I would have done that but since the back scale was broken I wasn't too concerned.

And some more work tonight.

Starting to come together pretty nice. One note that I would do differently is to not countersink as much as I did on the shield. You can see the ring around the pins.

Nice job, Rex! I sure wouldn't worry about the shield pins - you see many knives with the
same "rings" in there shields... just fine sand and polish er up. (sandpaper wraped around a popsicle stick keeps things flat)

Thanks for all of your words of encouragement. It's keeping me going even after the Oops I made today. See if you can tell what I screwed up.

Apparently it's a 10 picture maximum for each post. Had one more picture:

Filed the edges to give them a radius to match the bolster contours. All surfaces are close to where the final surface should be. I'll use sandpaper to finish it up. I'll probably wait until it's assembled to do the final sanding.

Not too large but in the wrong place.

After I drilled the first hole I realized there wouldn't be enough handle material near the top to make a nice oval pattern. There would have been a flat. Of course then I realized the flat would have been where the nail pull cutout would be so it wouldn't have mattered. By this point I had drilled the second hole. Doh!

I'll try to put a bit of clear epoxy mixed with cow bone dust inside the hole.

Had a chance to work on the beast for a bit again today.

Only 2 pictures today. I was at the point of assembling the knife so I started with the front scale, 1st spring, screw driver, & can opener. I don't have what everyone calls a spring compressor so I used my imagination. I put the pin through the screw driver and the spring first. I then placed the can opener where it should go and used the vice to squeeze the can opener against the spring and then popped the "bail barrel" pin in.

Let me tell you. This was beginners luck. I made the mistake of seeing if the blades opened and closed and the can opener popped off. It took me damn near an hour to line up the hole again to put it back.

After another half an hour of clamping, hammering, & pressing I was finally able to get all pins in. Next step is to make some shims before I start peening.

Just go easy when you start hammering on the pins, especially the bottom pin, I would hate to see you crack or chip off that nice bone.

Thankfully. Even though Dimitri tried to jinx me I peened the center pin & no cracks.

Yeah. I thought about the weight of it as being too heavy but I didn't put much muscle into it. I let the hammer do the work. I like the larger size because it seems easier to control for me anyway.
