All About Pocket Knives

KJ, all three of these Northwoods were from Dave Shirley. I have several Northwoods Knives in Bone, Stag and Ivory, all from the Dave Shirley Days! The Ivory Lock back doesn't have a number, it's just called a Mountain Man. I have not purchased any of the New Northwoods models from KSF but from the photo's I have seen, they don't look half bad.

LOL. Yeah, I wish I could. I live about 6 blocks from the Statehouse. Maybe I should sneak in there one day and light a fire under their butts.

Speaking of Northwoods from the Dave Shirley days, does it count if I don't own the knife anymore? I used to have this Ivory Railsplitter but I sold it to someone who wanted it more than me. I still have the Ebony version of the same knife.

Mitch, your Mountain Man is a Queen made knife, right ? Stunning rich ivory, did Dave S. supply it ?
Are you joking when you say the new Northwoods are not half bad ? Most are GEC made and the quality is tops. Probably the best USA made traditional style folding knives since WW II and that was 75 years ago. So, ythey are very good which is better than 'not half bad' !

KJ, Yes it's a Dave Shirley Knife made by Queen! As far as the new Northwoods knives go I'll take your word for it. I have never held one in my hands, I have only seen photo's of them. I will say though for some reason, I don't care to much for the Northwoods name etched on the blades, but that's just me!

I thought this 2008 GEC was mammoth ivory, but then I saw a photo of a David Taber knife with bark-elephant-ivory scales that look very similar (in KNIVES 2015, pg.90), so now I'm not so sure. I am pretty sure that Big Monk would know, however, since I got it from him.

KJ, I too love ivory, here is a photo of one I have made by Tony Metsala but it is mammoth ivory, if I can locate the photo's I'll post some I've made with elephant ivory, thanks for making this post, Terry

QTCut, i think those are elephant ivory, the so called "bark" (woof, woof ? no, tree) or outer surface that gets scarred up from use(by the elephant). I have a GEC with very similar bark elephant ivory, a #53, 4 1/8" Double End Jack, that i will show when i post my GEC made ivory knives.
But elephant ivory and mammoth ivory are essential the same substance but of very different ages. The outer part of mammoth gets stained from minerals in the area where it is buried. The inner part of mammoth is still creamy colored and without a microscope cannot be differentiated from elephant ivory.

Here is a a elephant ivory tip and knife that I made for a gentleman customer of mine, he has it displayed on his desk. The knife handle shows what bark ivory can look like. The customer furnished the ivory and I made the blade and put the tip handle on it and made the walnut stand with some walnut that I had on hand. It also has 2 tusk tips on each end mounted on the walnut stand. Thanks for looking, Terry

Here are a few I've posted before.
NYK 3 blade.
Guerre Fils(War Brothers)
Two Saynor horticultural knives.
Two Geo.Wostenholm knives.The larger has a date of 1870 on the shield.
A Persian jambiya circa mid-1600's
Several miscellaneous folders.
A small fixed blade I handled with pieces of old piano keys.
A Brookes & Crookes pipe knife.
A Russian multi-blade pre-1917.

Nice color there K7K, in every one. How full are the blades ? The vintage ones i have all have well worn down blades which must mean they were the favorite most used pocket knife. Or else those who like ivory tend to be lousy at sharpening and waste a lot of steel.

More ivory customs by me, sorry no vintage stuff, made in 2010. . These are ivory and ebony, 2 Damascus blades and one carbon steel. All are "interior" ivory with mosaic pins. Terry
