All About Pocket Knives

I love this thread but I don't have any photos as old as many of yours. This one I do have is circa 1947 of my grandparents. Kind of a glamor shot. My grandmother had quite a life. Baptized in the Yangtsee (sp?) river. She and her five brothers spoke fluent Chinese. In the thirties she had a national radio show with Don Ameche. She was big on the lecture circuit (women's issues) and each year General Motors provided her with a new Buick. She and her husband moved to Branson after the war and built the first golf course there with a highly rated restaurant with square dancing. Don was a fine golfer who put on trick shot shows like driving a ball from a tee held in the teeth of a pretty girl laying on the ground.

All the 3-dimensional goodies from past loved family members were taken by others. But I have many hundred of the best (OVB ) photographs. I traveled to other states and spent many hours and days photographing other folks' prints with my medium format camera and processing in my darkroom. I spent thousands of hours researching genealogy and extracted some really interesting stuff. Nobody in our extended family (some dozens of people) are particularly interested. I burned out on it after pretty much at dead ends and have just put the stuff away. Say... that camera and darkroom setup went from $15,000 worth to $250 worth almost overnight with the advent of digital photography. Still have it all. I guess one can order 120 film from NYC?

I used to shoot some 120 in an old tight bellows. Lots of fun.

Cal, of the few things I have from family I am beginning to look at younger members to give it to. One thing for sure, I am going to leave it all behind. Glad you got all the photo's and the joy of knowing a little more than most about your family. Some day someone will be researching you and thinking 'I wish I could have know him'. I enjoy your photo's.

My hero...my grandfather.

Born in ‘25, so these pics would be 41’ or 42’ish.
I just acquired these digital copies this year. Never knew they existed. Thrilled to have them.

My grandmother and grandfather.

My grandmother is the 2nd from the right, with one leg of her knickers missing. The kid with the stick on the left is my grand-uncle Loyd. He lived to be 99 and 11 months, and he passed a treasure trove of pics on to me. The pic was taken around 1917 in Cowley Co., Kansas.

The second is my grandfather on his horse Prince.

The third pic is their wedding day in 1932.

My mom and dad back in the day.... back before me or my sisters......

Here are a couple of pictures of my father-in-law some time in the 30's. They were in Orlando, Florida back in the good old days! Grandpa turned 95 in August.

Jerry D sent me a link to convert .tiff files to .jpg, which is slow but workable and I am grateful. Here is my first one. My Father's father's father's wife's brothers and father, about 1895 in Coryell County, Texas. The old man was born in 1825 and died at the age of 99 and 11 months. I have a cypress board from the house he built on Coryell Creek in 1867, with the help of two slaves who elected to stay with him after the Civil War.

A picture of my Grandmother, Ella, is Spokane, Wa. about 1968. I believe she was born in 1896.
She did a lot of sewing on that old foot powered sewing machine.

So many great photos in this thread - as I said classic moments in time ...

Here’s one I have to share and need to dig for some others...

My grandfather was a pharmacist in Brooklyn in the 1930s into the 1940s - all drugs at that time were actually made by the pharmacists - they didn't count pills like today's pharmacists so in making up drugs they would have been using spatula knives to weigh powders etc - wish I had his but I don’t - but do have a very old balance from the pharmacy. Anyway I remember my grandfather saying he was in the pharmacy 16 hours a day filling & making prescriptions from Drs, and the other thing was his store was a target for stealing alcohol during the days of prohibition... below is a photo of my grandfather in his pharmacy during the 1930s - check out the walls, sliding ladder on wheels and shelving stocked with all chemicals needed to make prescriptions ....

Great thread and pics. I am not for too much nostalgia, here is one of the only pics I have of my dads family. My dad is the loner in the middle. I never knew my alcoholic grandfather, but I did know my grandmother until her death at 88, worked until a few days before. I still keep in touch with those still alive.They had an extremely hard upbringing in the tough town of Ft. Benton, MT. Pic from late 50's or early 60's.

I love pictures like this. My mother has most of the older pictures, but I do have some scans from when I did a slideshow for my parent's 50th.

My mom, looking sharp! My dad, with his buddies. He's in the middle My grandfather and wife, at Disneyland. I only met him once. My grandmother, mother, and 2 of her siblings. My dad and his sister I always enjoyed this picture. Me, dad, and my brother and sisters. I'm the little scrapper!

Here's a picture of my dad at his cabin up in northern Idaho with a display of his guns. Sometime in the early 40s.

This thread is like a trip down a pleasant path. Glennbad, I particularly like the photo of your Mom all decked out.
Here are some photos of photos that I took.
First is my Dad with a pair of Mule Deer from the far west part of Texas. Officially I think it was called the trans Pecos but we always just called it the Big Bend. I believe this was pre-WWII so from sometime in the 1930s and the deer were taken near Valentine, Texas.
Second is my Mom's family on a sojourn out thru the LLano Estacado or Staked Plains. It was somewhere near Lubbock. Mom is the one on the blanket, so it was very early 1900s. Reason for the trip was that her oldest brother had had a leg amputated due to what they called TB of the bone and I feel sure that today it would be call bone cancer. The doc told Maw-Ma and Paw-Pa that he shouldn't lay around in the house to recoup so they just packed up the wagon and took off.
Third one is a handsome family of my mom or dad but unfortunately everyone who could ID the folks are gone. I am sure it was either mom or dad's family but I have no clue which.

Ray, an old fellow I knew said that when the took off like that across country that they woul camp beside the wind mills they came to across the country. It was an accepted practice and you always left the place clean. 6 to 12 miles a day was about average. Cool pic's.

I've got family members forwarding old photos which I will post as they arrive. This one is of my step-mother, who was a Navy Wave in WWII, driving a jeep with her step-father. He was born in Italy but came to the U.S. when he was 11. Fought in the infantry in, of all places, Italy.

George Huntley, great grandfather in 1876 in Bristol England. He would go on to become a doctor in China founding the first hospital in Shanghai. Trying to get photos of him at that period dressed as a Mandarin.
