Many is the time working on the ranch when we were branding and castrating calves I have seen the old Cowboys set down to eat lunch who pull out their pocket knife, the same one they had been castrating with, open the spey blade, because it's sharpest, and cut up an apple and eat it with their lunch. Maybe they wiped it on their pants after they finished castrating, maybe not.
Ironically, that usually wiped it on their pants after they cut the Apple, because apple juice was sticky.
lol. I know what you mean about them old guys. I guess I picked up some of their habits as a kid. I mean eating dirt and germs won’t hurt, makes ya strong! But a sticky knife blade? That’s just wrong. lol.
Great story my friend.
Grandma said ya gotta eat a peck of dirt before you die!

Please pardon my ignorance, but would someone kindly explain what "rona" means? This is the 2nd time this week I've heard the term, and have no idea what it means. Thanks, Mark!
It's a millennial 'new' word that has been shortened from the word Corona...i.e., Corona Virus. Hence; "rona". We're starting to see a lot of these 'shortened' words appear in the media and other social media venues.

It seems the younger generation can't speak true words anymore.
I know what you mean,

the kids have gotten so lazy it's just ridiculous!

The one that really gets me is "WORD",

now what the heck does that mean?
WORD is used to signify "I agree with you" or "you're right" or "he's right". Kinda like being short for"take his word for it" or "take his word as Gospel".
My mother's housekeeper (a young 30s something) while she (my mother) had a bad case of dermatitis on her leg and couldn't walk well would frequently say "WORD" when she agreed with something you said.

KJ, that’s just a meme that my neighbor lady found online that reminded her of me.

Great story, I thought for a while I was the only old redneck on the forum. No virus could live in my body, too many chemicals used from farming and taking care of sick livestock and using my pocket knife for various functions. Used my knife for cutting a lot of picnic meats after the plastic junk broke.

No sir Terry, I’s one too! Between all the cattle wormer, vaccines, tobacco chemicals, roundup, etc... I’ve eaten over the years, not counting dirt and everything else.... well you understand.

Until a few years ago when I got my first tractor with an enclosed cab I never realized how much dirt I inhaled, swallowed or otherwise “absorbed”.

For years! Now whenever I blow off the dirt or clean the cab filters, I think “that’s the crap that used to be all over me!”
One benefit however. - When this virus stuff started, I had a few N-95 masks, still in the box. Of course, the elastic bands were shot from age, but I reworked them.

I think “Word” translates into “amen” in codger speak.

I admit to doing this more than once. Including faculty dinners when all we had were those blasted plastic forks.
Yes;they frown upon you dipping it in your water glass first!

I remember my grandfather using his pocket knife to pare his fingernails and then move right into peeling(in one continuous ribbon)an apple and slicing it up.
