Here's a 6.5 Bonestag Slimline Trapper that I have.

I think you are right Ken - Case Amber bone is traditional bone jigging, while BoneStag has the simulated stag antler texturing. I do agree with one of the earlier comments that it seems a bit strange that Case "Genuine Stag" is often much smoother than some of the 6.5 BoneStag's more gnarled texture. However, Case also has multiple types of stag. There is Genuine, Sambar, Red, India and probably others. I don't really understand why there is both Sambar & India, aren't they from the same animal? Heck, for all I know, they could all be from the same type of deer.

Here's something to think about: You think Whitetail deer have it rough dealing with mountain lions, wolves & coyotes? Sambar deer are hunted by TIGERS...

Nice Mark! I especially like those from Canal Street! They look as good as real Stag!

I know it's getting off subject but I had to say, that "Burnt Amber" just wraps it all up in one neat little package. The jigging, the handle color, the threaded bolsters and the Wharncliffe secondary all together really pleases my eye.

Case is one of the few, if not the only volume factories remaining who use genuine stag, and have been for years. No doubt the availability of genuine stag suitable for knife handle covers (density, stability, etc) is dwindling and has become costly for use in volume production. Making a few high dollar custom knives or limited runs (Canal Street, GEC) is a much different proposition altogether from making thousands of production knives. I’ve read that Case has a limited amount of stag remaining, and has been unable to acquire more stag of the quality and volume they need. Therefore we are seeing fewer and fewer stag knives being produced at Case, and those that are made are only the smaller patterns. Probably the reason we see more creative attempts to produce genuine bone handles that resemble genuine stag.

I like that one Tom, I sold one like that to a fellow AAPK member here a couple of years ago or there about. That one is just such a sweet looking knife.

Thanks Mark! I agree with ya, on the bolsters, they should do more fancy stuff like that.

Here's a 2002 6.5 Bonestag Seahorse Whittler...looks like they kinda went a bit crazy with the jigging tool on this one.


Curiously, the pattern stamp shows "V6355WH" instead of 6.5355WH. My guess is Case used a Wharncliffe master blade that was leftover from the just completed run of Vintage Bone whittlers (waste not, want not).

I got curious about the origin of the 6.5 pattern stamp as the designator for “Bonestag”, so I posted the question on the CCC Forum in “Ask Case” thread. Here’s a copy of the announcement from the summer 2002 edition of Case Collector magazine. To be more precise, knives with that jigging were made prior to the 2002 introduction of the 6.5 designation and stamp. They just didn’t have the 6.5 stamp. Says knives having the 6.5 stamp would be arriving at dealers in August.
