The OP knife sold for $564.

I am truly sorry if petekuhn and ea42 feel I ruined their hopes of scoring this knife for less by posting it on AAPK before the auction had ended (BTW--did it ever occur to you that other AAPK members were already bidding against you before my post? ::hmm:: ). But, in my defense, I can only say that when I saw it my first thought was, "Oh my, this is a rare knife; I want to let my AAPK brothers know about this because I am sure there are some who would be very interested in getting it."

FWIW-- The same thing has happened to me more than once, although more often than not it's the seller who posts the knife I want in order to drum up interest and get a higher price. In most cases, I've been very grateful for the notice because I was not previously aware of it. And even if I didn't win, at least I got the chance to put in some bids for the amount I was willing to pay for it. I never harbor ill-will against anyone (even fellow AAPK members) for bidding against me because IMO an auction is open to all and fair game for whoever wants the item the most and is willing to pay whatever it takes to get it.

When I see a knife that I absolutely MUST have however, I don't care how many others see it, want it, or bid on it. As far as I'm concerned, price is no object and I WILL win the auction even if I have to pay more than I had initially hoped to pay for it. YMMV :)

There are over 27,000 AAPK members. It's kinda silly to think that members aren't bidding against each other.
I don't bid on eBay so I'm not bidding against any of you guys. If I did ebay and there was a knife I really wanted I would bid even if I knew other members were bidding. I also would not be upset if they bid against me.

I'm glad Q posted this knife, they aren't seen often.

I got a notice from ebay that the auction was ending soon. I haven't been watching it because I was afraid that I might be severely chastised for driving up the bid price by adding another number to the watching list on ebay. :D By the way I'd like to know who I can call when lose the bid on a knife and then a couple days later someone on AAPK is showing it off? ...... Ghostbusters maybe. ::tear::

What's even worse, IMO, is when I lose the bid and then see the exact same knife in an AAPK store for double the price it sold for on eBay (this actually happens quite frequently). I've also sold knives to other members for really good deals because I thought that was considerate and considered "good form" only to see the knives show up on eBay a week later with a much higher asking price than what I sold it for. As Eric said: C'est la vie!

If the generally accepted protocol is not to bid on a knife that another member is bidding on, then perhaps I will start posting every knife I'm bidding on in order to eliminate all competition from everyone who reads the forum. ::hmm:: In fact, everyone should probably do that as well just to make sure nobody gets their toes stepped on. LOL!

I have lost several auctions to fellow AAPK members and am always glad that it at least is staying in the family.

I thought the knife was in pretty rough shape so if I had bid on it my stoping point would have been $100. Since it was over that pretty quick i did not bid on it.

Looks like Pete is gone, hasn't signed on since his last post :( Too bad looked like he had some nice old knives to share.

I agree with David and Gregg nothing was done wrong here by Q posting the auction in fact I appreciate it when members bring an auction with an interesting knife to my attention.

Supposedly a free country ,(not to sure about that anymore), so anyone can bid on the auction. I think it's foolish to think you will " steal" a knife because nobody is looking. This seller has sold many knives and has a following so I am sure he would have got the same price wether or not it was posted here.

As far as that other knife site, nobody is going to tell me it's "illegal" to post a link to an auction on the internet  ::huff::

That's the difference between AAPK and the rest of them!

And in case you're wondering no I did not bid or have any interest in the OP knife or auction.

I have alerted AAPK members to an unknown number of Ebay auctions for Robeson or Terrier knives in which I had no interest.

I have done that openly and through private messages to an individual, whose area of pattern interest I was aware.

Based on the preponderance of opinions in this thread, I will no longer post such items openly on AAPK.

And I apologize if such postings have ever cost someone here more money or, indeed, a wanted knife.

I cannot see any problem showing knives for sale on eBay or any site. I have done this myself over ten years hoping a member might be interested in the knife.
In that time I have only seen one person complain. I have had knives I was bidding on also shown. I consider it's a world wide market when a knife is list on the internet. Did I complain when I didn't win the knife or someone listed it before it was sold. I always set a limit that I will pay . I have been to many auctions where my friends and relations out bid me. That is the idea of auction the one willing to bid the highest wins.

If you "lose" an auction on eBay it's not because someone posted it on AAPK. It's because you didn't bid high enough.

Charlie, I suggest that you keep posting exactly what you want to post. There are many, many folks on this forum. And just three or so expressed displeasure with making a post about a knife on Ebay. It is the old timers like you that created the culture of AAPK, and the culture that you early members created is what has brought us later members to the forum. So keep doing what you do!

Charlie, I have PM'd folks when I see a knife I thank they would like and I have received such notices. I don't have a problem with post like that. I don't see anything wrong done. ::shrug::

Ebay is a public auction not a private sale. All of us here on AAPK are knife enthusiasts and have an interest in what knives sell for. There is absolutely nothing wrong with calling attention to an Ebay listing that is of particular interest to you, or that you think would be of interest to others. There's no way of knowing who is bidding or who might be lying in wait.

There are at least two ways of looking at this issue. If you're the seller you'll appreciate all the attention that can be directed to your listing. If you're a potential buyer, you'll want to keep it all on the down low. Good luck with that on an auction platform with millions of potential buyers.

Charlie I've benefited from your calling attention to knives that fit my area of interest and I sure hope you continue giving me a heads up when you can. I would happily do the same for you or others.
