Great pictures J.P. .... Looks like I need to get into the blood/plasma selling 'biddness (see earlier in the thread for more info and some hot babes to boot ). ... I lose 'bout a pint of blood for every two scrap loads.... I'd rather be sitting in the AC, looking a pretty women and getting some orange juice and a cookie when the un-hook my arm at the end...

Helping a friend clean up a 5-acre lot and finding some stuff on the way to their place. just trying to keep junk out of the land fill....

Some of these finds I call "Scrapper's Delight"

I had this headboard jammed in my garage and I decided to scrap it. Much to my surprised I forgot it had brass "foot-pieces" ... I pulled them off and couldn't believe how heavy they were ... several lbs. of brass it turns out ....

I don't frequent this thread other than to check for birthday links, but as I was doing so today I spotted this topic and decided to read some stories you guys post and I thought I'd share this story with ya'll.
One of my ex's had an ex-boyfriend who made his living scrapping and she joined in helping him, but they did it smart since it was their only source of income. They collected ONLY copper, brass, and certain steels since they are the high pay items the junk yards want, and it wasn't uncommon for them to leave the junk yard with $1,500.- $2,000. in cash for 1 night's work using a junker half-ton! Of course there's a catch, the would break into city utility yards where they have all those big spools of copper wire, street signs, machinery, and all sorts of city parts and stuff. They couldn't take an entire spool of wire since it's so large, but they were able to retrieve some scraps of pure copper like end pieces.
This man ended up being a high ranking member of the Hells Angels, and spent plenty of time in the penitentiary, not for stealing but for trafficking, and my ex ended up with me, which is similar to the penitentiary!
The moral is, don't have ex's keep the one you've got, or better yet love the one you're with!

I have separate piles for my scrap out by the barn - aluminum, steel/iron and copper wire / brass.

When the steel accumulates to a trailer load, and when the copper wire/brass or aluminum reaches a "pickup load", I load that pile up and haul it off to the scrapyard about 3 miles away.

My steel pile includes tin cans from food. I rinse the cans and crush them and drop them into a trashcan with a trash liner until there is about 15# in the bag and then stack the bag with the other bags. I figure anything I recycle and keep out of the landfill is a win.

Marco, it turns out I am loving the brass "foot-pieces" that I pulled off the headboard in my garage, ... they turned out to weigh almost 8 lbs. .... at about $2.50 USD a lb. .... I've struck it rich!!!

Great catch, buddy, now you have beer money for the weekend, Yee-Haw! Don't forget, they only pay for the brass, not the wood they're attached to.

I prefer scrap gold and silver. Gold is 10x higher than 25 years ago.

I took this kitty litter pail full of cartridge case brass to the scrap metal buyer today. It was worth $2.05 a pound times 55 lbs. Nice chunk of pocket money.

Chaaa-ching!!!! Nice haul O.C. ... Years ago I would scrap out a 5 gallon buckt of brass like that and it always wieghed about 50 lbs. .... ... but back then I only got $0.33 a lb. for it....

I was having a lot of trouble getting the copper windings out of the steel casing with hand tools... A lot of trouble I had to resort to extreme measures ... I ended up pulling up/breaking off half of the tree that I attached the chain to secure the casing..... I started pulling and the branch broke right off

All to get about $3.25 worth of copper!!! ...

That’s not worth the time vs the pay off. Talk to the scrap yard, there is an electric motor price for stuff like this. I knock the motor out of washers to sell separately and sell the housing of the washer for appliance/tin price. Seperating and cleaning your load is how you make money, but there is a stopping point.

You said it C-W!!! .... I was breaking down I bunch of copper/brass aluminum this month in the 110 degree heat of Arizona.... I finally realize ... I am spending hours to "Break-it-on-down" and making $0.01 on the dollar ....
