I agree with Mumblypeg on all points. Learned the hard way: permanent damage to metal components, such as blade spines and bolsters, on what in some instances had been mint knives, because of reactivity between metal and chemical compounds used in rubber for those elastics.

I've been keeping some of my knives in Plano brand Prolatch Stowaway storage boxes that you can find in the fishing tackle aisle at Walmart. Made in the U.S.A. They're made for the storage of fishing lures etc. They are compartmented and come with inserts which adjust for length. The label easily peels off.

I can't tell from your pic what size Plano you are using. I have about everything I have stuffed into the full size Plano boxes...Everything that folds anyway. I'm still trying to work out something for fixed blades. I have folders in Planos 4 or 6 deep in Large HD Tote/Gift bags. For example Case xx is in a baby Yoda bag from Disney. Boxes and Case xx fixed blades are in a plastic tub from the hospital that fits perfectly on top of the 4 Plano boxes sitting deep in the bag. I like everything portable.

Outgassing chemicals from the elastic and/or other materials damages the nickel silver and brass components of knives. You think everything is okay - until it’s not. Then it’s too late. The resulting corrosion and pitting it causes is irreparable.

I’ve personally experienced the tragedy and there are numerous similar testimonials from others in posts here on AAPK. BTW I sympathize with your predicament. My wife also has taken a “no more knives” policy. (Fortunately she thinks all knives look alike, so I manage to occasionally sneak in a few. 8) ).

Thank you Ken, I have wondered if there was any down side to them. What about the hard side with the foam to hold the knives?

Like others have posted, storage solutions are evolutionary as collections expand. My current solution is twofold; one for EDC knives and one for collections.

My EDC’s are in this Gerstner Coopers jewelry box that was given to me when I tried to retire in 2018. Before EDC knives it held watches, my wallet, checkbook, etc. now it holds almost 100 knives that I can grab to my hearts desire

My collections are housed in this rolling Craftsman case:

The upper drawers hold knives standing on their back springs so that they are easily accessible. The lower drawers have bamboo desk trays stacked 3 high that hold knives standing on their back springs so that they are generally fairly easy to access:

I have under $500 invested in the rolling storage including the bamboo trays. For now this is working for me and since my buying is very minimal it’s probably my final storage solution.

The Plano in my photo is 11" x 7.25" x 1.75" Mostly, I use that size.

I do have a couple of larger-sized Planos that are 14" x 9"

I don’t have any experience with the hard side with foam cases. I’ve acquired a couple of pistols that came in such cases but the pistols were removed and placed in Sack-ups “socks” for storage in the safe when not in use. My recommendation is always Sack-ups but they aren’t cheap so I’ve had to discipline myself to buy a few at a time. I was fortunate to buy some used Sack-ups from an AAPK member who had sold his knives, and no longer needed the Sack-ups. So I currently even have a couple of extras. I have seen good recommendations from some members here for silverware cloth rolls but haven’t tried them myself.

I had a problem with a knife that came from the factory in a clamshell style case with a foam insert. There was a cutout in the foam for the knife. After a period of storage the foam deteriorated/disintegrated and stuck to the knife. Disgusting mess, but I was able to clean it off the knife using a solvent. Fingernail polish remover (acetone), IIRC. I guess there’s two ways to look at it. Either a small sample size, or a high percentage of failure. ::shrug::

I examine and clean every knife at least once, usually twice, each year. Believe me it’s a shock, and dismayed bewilderment feeling when you open the roll and find damaged knives especially when you think your storage method is good. The knives probably don’t need cleaning that often but I usually can’t resist looking at, and “coon fingering” them. After I have “violated” them they have to be wiped down before re-storage. ::paranoid::
