I have a small Robeson Shuredge jack with the same handles and stamp that I was informed dated from between 1959-1965. Here is how the "shurwood" was described to me..."a compressed composite material made of multiple layers of wood, perhaps rosewood, and a phenolic resin"

As far as the hole in the side of the bolster...I'm just guessing here...but might it somehow be utilized as part of it's function as a fishing knife?... a hook tip holder or rest of some sort? ...just brainstorming

whitebuffalo the answer is no. the only marking is the front tang stamp. no numbers on the reverse or either side of the scaler blade? I don't think there's a missing bail either.

Mike313 i'm not familiar with shurwood? sounds good to me. i will say this, if it's multiple layers I don't see them. kinda looks like solid wood slabs to me but what do I know

Nice little surprise in an auction lot today. Sheffield made for a retailer in Sydney (Australia I'm thinking, confirmation would be nice). Three thick with five blades, stag scales and pinched bolsters. The hawkbill is missing some of its tip and two of the other blades are down a bit but a very interesting knife. The main blade still has an etch.

Levines Guide illustrates that knife, although with ebony handles. I'm not with the book, so I cannot provide the page number.

I've always thought that to be a desirable knife and those bone handles make that one even better.

Cool! That's a rather informative link. I've posted the same thread over on an Australian knife forum as well. Hopefully they will be able to provide even more information.

I stand somewhat corrected.

The knife in Levine;s also has bone stag handles, they just look like ebony in the woodcut illustration.

LG-4 shows the knife with six blades on page 313, but does state it comes in different sizes, 3 1/2" and 4", and with four, five and six blades.

They also marketed a special six blade speying knife with six identical hawkbill blades.

He refers to them as "Station and Farmers Knives".

He valued them, at the time of publication, 1997, at $90.00 to $210.00, in excellent, unsharpened condition.

My wife encouraged me to go do something while she was undergoing a final procedure at the hospital yesterday afternoon. I found a pawn shop with a bunch of intresting knives and was able to capture 3 of them before my wife was discharged from a 5 day stay for a slight stroke.
I was able to get a Case Bros. Cutlery Co, 61265LCSS, that appears to be mint, tin, paper work and pouch.
A Ducks Unlimited Shrade 880T also got to come home with us. It has some staining on the blades but they appear not to have been sharpened since the factory. I especially like the green scales and the brass bolsters. It has both the pick and tweezers in the handles.
The little yellow Moore Maker is about 3 1/4" closed. It has a few rust spots and doesn't appear to have been on a whet rock. The blade has been blued. This is the 1st MM knife I have owned. Were they made by Queen?
Last evening was just like Christmas at our house as my wife was able to come home from the hospital and I ended up with 3 pretty neat knives. Treefarmer

Treefarmer, any idea on how old that Moore Maker is? I know nothing about this company out of Matador, TX, but they seem to be producing quality knives. Sweet finds guys!

Phil, I'm glad to hear your wife is home and on the road to recovery. That stroke business is scary stuff. Hang in there and we'll all keep our fingers crossed it never happens again.

I can just hear your wife, "Phil, I can't let you out of my sight for five minutes or here you come, waggin' home a bunch more of them old knives. You're sick Phil. Sick. Sick. Sick. Get help Phil."

Oh wait. That's not your wife I hear. Now I recognize that voice in my head. It's one of my ex-wives, raggin' on me about something that didn't happen during our marriage.

From somewhere in the dark recesses of my fading memory I seem to recall that particular Moore Maker's knife was produced by Camillus. They have also sold knives made by Queen and Canal Street that I'm aware of. (There very well may be other companies involved in this vast conspiracy) My understanding is that they do not produce any knives themselves. Instead they contract with knife manufacturers to produce knives for them.

The newer MM are made by Bear & Sons......but like Phil,I believe yours was made by Camillus.
That Case is a sweety. .....nice finds.

Here's my latest find. An 1876-1941 Ulster Knife Co. 2-blade jack w/ebony slabs. It's seen a little use, but still has the crown & arrow blade etch.
