I have a LOT of work to do on background!
I go for repeatable pics just now. I use a Nikon Coolpix P60 Point and Shoot. 8.1 Megapixils.
It has a fair amount of adjustment. I shoot as big of a picture as the camera will take. I use Irfanview to crop and resize and I always make a size that will show on my screen with no scrolling.
This shot has the bright outdoors behind and I use flash to make the knife "pop":

Would you agree that if I used a more interesting background my pics would be better?

Overcast can make some dramatic lighting for sure.

Yes indeedy, overcast helps disperse light and reduces glare
while also providing truer colors. Least that's what I heard.
