The answer is yes Joe! BUT, there was a smaller, 3" LB-85 Ranger LB also! It must have come after this display case was designed cause there doesn't seem like there is a spot for it in this case! The missing LB's are the # 125 on top, and the # 923, two blade large stock. and the # 933 three blade stockman....I wish I could fill in the empty spots for you but now at least you know which style #'s your looking for...I'll keep my eyes open for you.

The "NCCA" semmed be impressed enough to take my picture in the August 1997 issue of their newswletter....
I took first place in "Factory Customized Knives" and won a beautiful stag handled Case Collectors knife that I earned for my work... all these pics are in my book ..
I am proud for myself and grandpa Fred would be proud too...

I have a vague recollection of a small Ranger stockman -clip, sheepsfoot and pen blades -square bolsters -black Delrin covers. Am I remembering correctly?

Actually, the large stockman's were the only ones to have square bolster's..
The medium and small stocks. and jack knives in general all had rounded bolster's!

Who's that handsome young devil at the left of that picture?

Bobby, this knife is stamped Colonial instead of Ranger on the tang - were these little ones ever stamped "Ranger"?
What about a blade etch on this one ant the Barlow? Did you make um with it?

Hey pal, thanks for the compliment!!
The early Ranger's had a barrel or tubbed finish...this process was done to many of the inexpensive knives at the time.(70's)..it was kind of dull but easy and quick!
The later Ranger's had that visual horizontal grinding which avoided the tubbing finish.
This grinding was applied with the new synthetic grinding wheels that we bought..
The synthetic grind actually gave the blades a thinner but MUCH sharper edge!!
I believe the new grinding also included the Ranger tang stamp....to be perfectly honest Joe, I don't remember?

Here's the Case knife I won at the NCCA 1997 knife show!!
The bolster's are etched "1997" on one side, and "NCCA" on the opposite side.

This is a picture of the beginning major factory construction in or about the mid to late 30's. The little brick two story building in the background was the one initially purchased building by grandpa in 1929, Calender Street, Providence, Rhode Island......
The cellar " I " beams were the start of the construction of Colonial's factory and the shipping room was directly above those I beams in this picture!!

Thank's Miller Bro's; I might take you up on that! I'm a bit dumb when it comes to some of the simplest computer functions but what I lack in computer skills, I make up for in knife knowledge! Haha...
Mr. "reddirtknives" has an old favorite here! Produced and dolled up with some very pretty old time Celluliod!! Curved tang stamp and handle shrinkage tells me early to mid 40's on this baby...We made more of these in the 60's and 70's in a blue and red checkered plastic handle! They were the Italian's favorite mushroom knife!
This particular item being over 60 years old has definately been used and cleaned up really nice!! I say this because it's been opened and closed so many times, and pressure has been put on the blade joint so much, the main assembly pin has not only rounded out, it's actually sunken in! The tang and blade are so clean and has been sanded very nicely with a fine grit, maybe 220 or finer!!
I support my claim because back then these blades were finished rather crudely and never came out of the factory with an almost satin finish!! Nice job on the clean up.
If it were mine, I'd vise the back spring, knock out that pin with a punch, re-countersink the bolster's and seat a new pin..then heft and polish the bolster's....
That's just me my friend because I'm a cutler and that's what we do or used to do..

Just leave it be because it's age is obvious and the pin and bolster issue gives it character!
Thanks for the show pal...she's still probably worth 30-50 bucks, to a valued collector.

Hey Gino, how are ya?
Yup, this was one of ours, CKCo.....
The Hunter style blade was used so frequently with so many handle materials for so many years, and here's were I come in! The infinite amount of handles does actually tell a story about it's age, to me to the best of my knowledge.
First lets start with the blade. These blanks were specificly made for a plastic handle insertion. What that melts down to is that the blanks didn't have "FULL" tangs, as you and I know today. They were desiged with half and even 1/4 inch tangs to be inserted into a plastic handle. Since we had two nice plastic molding injection machines, they could have a tool made and with mass production and sales, they would have the tool payed for in no time! So they ended up making dozens of handle tools and used the same dozen or so hunting blades styles and well, you know!
This specific old black handle has special meaning to me. In my 8 years or so working in the shipping room, these were the "bench knives" we kept on all four benches! I'll never forget when I started officially in the SR, we had these exact knives and most of them had 1/2 to 1/4 inch WIDE blades!! After cutting cardboard for years and re-sharpening them in a pinch on the bench with files they just lived...
After all that, this ones about mid to late 60's and has seen some action herslf..GOOD! It's still in one piece!!

It has the handles Bobby mentioned above. Got the later streight line stamp on it also.
This knife is a re-post from another thread awhile ago.

Had one that I would like some information on if possible. It has the "Colonial,lockback,PR RI." tang stamp.
I for some reason can't git the pic is to upload but it is a one blade lock back with the lock in the middle and raised. I will try to git the pic's to load up when I git home.

Knifetime comes up with a classic!! Way before Colonial's official attempt at a lockback like the LB-125, 95, and 85 or the CY-15, 14, or 13, was : The Colonial LB-1 Lockback!
No matter what handles we put on it, she was never a big seller and never really mass produced. Tha's good for you cause it's worth more! It was a shelled knife and had an ugly straight blade grind!! This knife never got the love it should have and was probably made in the early 70's and would still bring 20-30 bucks!!

Cool Bob thanks. I plan on just keeping it. It is the first one I have saw like it. It works very well and is made solid belt. It has been sharpened but that's ok I am still going to keep hear just as example of one of Colonial´s early lock back.
I have got some more Colonial miniature hear lately also. Hear are 2 of them with 2 more of the sheathed knifes I hope to come.

Hear are 2 more I am adding to my mini collection and they are in great shape.

These are Colonial's "Cub Hunter" brand. The early 70's were big with this item; especially with the ad specialty division of Colonial.
I have a few issues with these....The one with the imprinted sheath is authentic. We might have even made a cheaper vinyl sheathe years later...
The one thing I do not approve of is the "glued" on pcs. that were clearly applied to the handles and the sheaths AFTER they left the factory!! I remember handling thousands of these little items in every department from blanking to packing and shipping and NEVER in my years did I ever see such sloppy, slapped on ad specialty "ad on's"....
With this item, surface imprint of the plastic handles and Hot Die Stamp to the sheath was the only thing we did!!!
This not to say somebody bought some plain "Cub Hunter's" and did thier own ad specialty,
which is more than fine, I'm just telling you these never came from our factory the way they are in these photo's.....
I hope you understand, I'm just being as honest and accurate as humanly possible....
They are neat to look at and wonder who and why??
