Carpenters Special etch invokes seriousness of purpose to the Schrade big whittler. It is listed in catalog "E" supplement as an 81004 3/8Stg with fibestos handles, but this one has jigged bone (bonestag). I don't see it actually listed as such, but it may be I'm looking in the wrong place (Eric??). It certainly looks authentic to me. The slight pitting goes into the etch, marring it slightly, suggesting originality. LT and others have told me not everything is in the Catalog so......... here it is!

Another beauty Charlie! i don't think those numbers in the catalog were the only models available for these knives. Likely there was an order, or orders for that knife in bone, or they made a bunch in bone available to their customers. It would have been numbered 81003 3/8 if anyone has any invoices?? (that's a long shot, I know!) I've actually seen many more of those in bone than I do in fibestos, so I'm not sure what went on with that model They actually carried on into the Schrade -Walden with the peachseed bone as well, so maybe these were made near the transition. This is all speculation mind you. Here's a shot of a S-W:

That's a nice one too, Eric! Nice deep color on the bone.
Mine has an etch on the pile side too, which I neglected to scan. I closed the main blade to show off the smaller blade tang stamps on the back, without over-stressing the springs. The etch says "Kalt Lumber", so indeed may have been a special factory order!

Ever seen a Schrade Walden 210B? Ever hear of one? A first for me, shown with a standard size IXL barlow for comparison.

This came from Mystic, and is stamped Ulster / Knife USA.

So is that Divine, or Baer ? Cousins maybe ?

What is the handle made of, Fran? So far, I have the SW version starting in 1953, according to available catalogs.

very neat knives. i found a s-w 110 in an old book. same knife, only one blade.

The Ulster ? Bone. Some faint saw cut marks, but almost polished away.

I thought I would take this opportunity to show some of the new methods I am using for displays ect. Besides it has been a while since we dug this thread up. Doing shows to promote a museum ( which I am sure you are tired of hearing talk about ) I have found that displays are managable and allow minimum packing and un packing here are some displays I recently started doing to show off certain patterns and to show some of the different various etchs, handle materials ect that were used . I also included a pic of a shield board. These actually were used by the old companies usually however the shields were soldered to a piece of brass these had a couple of uses first new prospective customers could look at it and pick what style and size they wanted for there knives. Also new employees could be shown the various styles learn there names and to know what they were looking for when they were told to go get some from stock. I used glue and a board which I then vacuum sealed. I also included a tang board as you know I have many many original tang die stamps and this was an experiment to se if I could use some to mark a sheet of metal and make a display. It did not come out very good as you can see but it was a first attempt. I have no ide3a time being as it is when I will ever get back to this project. I was just snapping some random shots and thought I would include it. Just some pics which I hope you find interesting. LT

Those are some amazingly nice displays LT. I love how the blanks are in there with the handle variations. Very cool idea. I was just thinking about this thread the other day when I slipped a newly finished USA Schrade into my back pocket.

I just realized I only have one old Schrade.

There are a few exceptions, being:
1. my schrade cut scout, but since it was given to me by an uncle I don't consider it part of my collection since I would never trade it.
2. three modern Schrades
3. a TL-29 which is with my other military knives
4. I had a real nice bone handle farmer's jack which I gave to my dad for christmas (if anyone is interested I do have a picture)

My only Schrade is this simple advertising piece. I just haven't had any luck finding a Schrade in any sort of decent condition besides this one. It is a bit interesting in that it has a tapered liner to allow for the file.

Here is a recent pick up. Schrade Walden 810 Senator 3 1/8" Seems like it was never sharpened, no half stops, probably sat in a drawer for many years.
This is one pattern I have not seen too many of- could be due to my limited time in the collector sphere.

I think it is fairly rare to see one of those, outside of some nice collections. That being said, Charlie might have one or two to pull out. The 810 pattern was derived from the old 8103 Schrade Cut Co, and the pattern was "Lost in the 50's", probably about 1955 or so. It sure is a nice Senator with some dandy swedges. Glad to see it.

Paul, your Schrade Walden may be more rare than the Schrade Cut Cos!! I've managed to accumulate 7 Cuts but no Waldens! I have measured as carefully as I can, and these all seem to share the same handle pattern. Tip bolsters create an interesting illusion, and I didn't believe it, until I measured.
The only one with a pattern number is the lower right jack in the 4 knife pic; A salesman sample, it is inked 2423. The one next to it is the same pattern, but in pretty rare stainless steel. Above on the right, I guess the spey blade qualifies the knife as a Cattle knife, maybe for miniature cows !
The whittler in the 5 knife pic has a split, wedged set of springs.
The two bottom knives with tips are genuine stag.
I used to shy away from smaller knives, but these are well made, and usually reasonably priced.

Charlie- thanks again for another "Shock & Awe" presentation of knives. I'm surprised (pleasently) that my 810 is
rarer than I thought. I will need to curb my collecting for a while, made a college tuition payment today OUCH!

Fortunately my children are past college age (my sympathies, Paul!),
so I was able to purchase this. Someone put it up on Bryan's "rolling ad-pics" at the top of the home page, and when he went back to check it out, I had purchased it!! Even an old bear catches a fish, once in a while!!

Nice!! Right place at the right time on that one you old goat! Really nice lines on that one, everything balances beautifully.
