All About Pocket Knives

Without further ado I present my Chestnut Bone CV Peanut.

Nice knives guys! I found a few at the flea market and antique shops today...
A mint condition Klein, a Harrison Brothers & Howson Sheffield MOP, and a cute little well used Swanworks Ohligs Germany (too bad about the blade). cheers

Oh my god!!!! Do I love swap meets and flea markets! I scored yesterday not only at the Puyallup swap meet (http://www.thefair.com/fun/details/earl ... -swap-meet), I met a guy yesterday buying an old saw mill blade that I can cut up later for knife steel and we got talking about knives and he invited me to his house and...........well, first the swap meet knives.

First is an older Robeson ShurEdge pruning knife. The old gentleman had a whooping $7.00, I asked to buy it for $3.00 and we struck a deal. I left that nice gentleman and headed off. The swap meet was huge and took up three large buildings on the fair grounds property including a lot of space outside. After meeting two jerks at other booths, it was almost time for me to leave as I had a meeting set up at just past 1500 in Kingston, Wa. to meet another gentleman about a saw mill blade. As I was heading out, I saw a guy with two large glass cases, one marked "$10 stuff" and his other case which wasn't marked. As I was looking at the knives under the glass, we got to talking about his Case hunters in there when I noticed a swell center clone. I asked to see it and out comes this Hammerbrand #72 clone. It still walks and talks, the handles on it haven't shrunk and I would say that 90% of the blades are still left. I walked away with it for $10. HOWEVER, the best story is yet to come!!!!!

Ok, so I leave the swap meet a bit later than expected on my way up to Kingston to meet the guy about the blade. I give him a call and he tells me not to worry since we are meeting at the McDonalds parking lot on the main street thru town. Earlier I had talked to his wife and we agreed not to meet at the house since I was a total stranger and this happened to be a Craigslist deal.
Anyhow, I get up there and call him back and let him know Im at the meeting spot. Well ten minutes later he shows up, its raining cats and dogs and we get out of our vehicles to look at the blade. It's 31" in diameter and a bit rusty but we agree on $20 for the thing. He asks what I plan on using it for and I tell him knife making bushcraft knives since this steel is most likely L6. He gets this look in his eyes and asks me out of the blue if I'm familiar with Ruana knives? I say heck yeah ( ) and he asks if I want to see them. So despite what his wife and I agreed to, he tells me to follow him to his house as he has a "few" knives he wants to show me.
We get to his house and he leads me into his three story, detached garage. On his main garage floor he has a MINT condition 1954 Jeepster and a MINT condition 1934 Model T roadster. He gets to telling me about all his cars and how living in Alaska he has acquired all his stuff. He goes on to explain to me he is looking at downsizing his hunting and fishing gear so he and his wife can start another car project.
He leads me past his beauties up to the second floor of his garage and we enter his sportsman's store room. It is packed with knives, guns, ammunition, fishing gear, antique fishing lures STILL IN THE BOX ( ). So the first knife he pulls out is his Ruana "M" stamped 19B tapered skinner. God at this point I had wished I hadn't left my cell phone in the Jeep. As I'm fondling this knife, he starts explaining how many moose in Alaska he has caped and skinned. I'm listening intently and it feels like I am there with him. The next knife he pulls out is this beautiful Western fix blade knife. Based on the tang stamp it was made between 34-50. By this time he is telling me that NONE of his boys are interested in carrying on his hunting tradition nor are they interested in acquiring his sporting goods he has collected. He then pulls out two MINT condition Gerber knives, still in the box with the original sheaths. They even have the original wood handles.

Well, to make a long story short, I had promised my wife that I was heading out with a budget. That budget DID NOT include another Ruana knife nor did it include two, NIB Gerber knives. Matter of fact, after the swap meet and the saw blade, all I had left was $20 on me. Thankfully it was enough to purchase the Western. I have been on the internet all day looking for this handle design and have not found it yet.
So, as I'm finally getting ready to leave, he wants to know if I'm interested in the Ruana's. He has three he said but couldn't find the other two and based on the amount of stuff he has, I don't doubt he has them. I tell him I am but just don't have the resources at the time to purchase them. He tells me not to worry and when I'm ready, I get first shot at them. He also said to make it a sunny day so he can take me out in his roadster as well......

The two hour drive home didn't even matter. I can't wait to talk to him again.

Oh come on MountainMan, it ain't our bed time yet! Don't be pullin' a Paul Harvey on us ! This was just gettin' good .

I'll have to look into that. TBH, one of the best parts of yesterday was listening to his stories about hunting, his cars and his woodworking. I even got a little mad at his kids when he told me they weren't even interested in any of the history he had.

if smaller than the OAL of #48....could be a pattern # 28 maybe?

Picked these up a couple days ago. The two are twins but one has been lightly used and the other never used or sharpened. The liners on the unused one were factory clean. Both Camillus with the four line stamp. The other has the made in u.s.a.stamp and has some great looking old bone. I'd trade one of the twins if someone was interested.

LOL, hey Robert, are the shields original? From here they look like they might've been added later, hard to tell from the pics?

I see what you're talking about in my crappy pics I take. It kinda looks like some glue or epoxy around them in the pics but its not there in person. There is a little crud on em as I haven't given them a bath yet (yes, I'm a lazy bum). The shields are original just dirty. I bought em from a lady (in person) that was selling off her husbands stuff as he had recently passed. She has a nice bayonet of his from WWII for sale also. I spent the money I had on the pocket knives. Might check with her on payday and see if she still has it.

Good deal, just couldn't tell from the pics. The bayonets can bring some good money at knife shows these days. The last time I had a few, I wound up selling them for double what I payed for them.

You don't say............ . I know just about doodley squat about anything and even less about bayonets. She wanted 75 bucks for it and I would have bought it just cause I thought it was cool if I had the cash on me. I better do some research so I know what I'm looking at the next time.

I would say that $75 is at the top of what I would pay for one depending on who made it, the tang stamping, and if it had all the proper markings. KA-BAR, CASE and so on.

I just received this Colorado Scout by Colorado Cutlery from a friend yesterday ...great knife, super stout!
