Schrade Cut Co hawkbill - Bit of a project in this one, what you can't see in the before picture is the two more layers of red and green paint under the white. It cleaned up fairly well and was a fun project.

nice grain underneath that paint. I love the rat tailed bolsters on a hawkbill

Nice restoration of that Hawk, AKC!! Never give up on a nice old goodie; could be a hidden gem like that one!!

While digging out a duplicate to sell to a friend, I got most of my Schrade HJs in one location, so took this scan. It is nice to see them all together, to spot the variations over the years. I've added a scan of some of the punches for comparison as well. I hope this is of some interest;

I'm pretty sure they were giveaways, but I remember there's an article in a Knifeworld about them. I will have to dig it up.

Beautiful group of Schrade Cuts Charlie.

There are two, one in each photo with light colored bone that I don't think I would have recognized as Schrade. Especially the one in the second photo.

Is that bone Schrade's, or did someone else have a hand in producing those two knives ?

Fran, I think you are referring to the third last knife in the first pic. The one in the second pic is the same knife. Schrade jigging and color on the old ones is remarkably consistent. This one is an exception. It is essentially the same jig as the one to its right, but I think it was a little thick, and was polished down through the dye when it was hafted! Note the jigging is shallow with only the bottoms of the "pits" remaining, making it look like a different jig. I don't think it was just pocket wear.

There is something compelling about junior sized Cattle knives. A nice compact package at 3 3/8" long, with plenty of blades. So I would always purchase or trade for them, even if I knew I had one. The result is way too many in my collection. (My name is Charlie, and I am addicted to knives!)
It seems Schrade took advantage of the tooling, making all kinds of variations, for themselves and for others. Even the 4 blade is not a huge pocketful. Here we see that 4 blade (pretty rare I think), several 3 blades, and some 2 blade variations as well. Notice the Keen, Ulster, and D-E knives that appear related!

Here my latest love , A sweet little SCHRADE CUT CO. I dont know alot about it ,maybe some of y'all can help.
Both blades are tang stamped: SCHRADE / CUT CO. / WALDEN, N.Y. . The back side of the Long Pull Master reads S2264 3/4 Stg with two more lines of numbers and symbols?

Charlie, that is a VERY nice grouping I could sit and stare at that peachseed all day.

Randy, that's a nice salesman's sample. It was present in the 1926 catalog, although yours is a somewhat special arrangement. in stock form it came witha spear blade and cell handles, which would have been designated by the numbers 2264 followed by a letter designating the type of cell. In your case, some modifying was done. The "S" prefix represents a special combination or finish, which in your case I think is twofold. First is the 3/4, which means a clip blade was substituted for the standard spear, and second, I don't think that particular cell, a stag look cell "stg" was a readily available option for that knife at the time, possibly it was a new introduction? Really nice piece, looks like it just came off the line

PS- I have no idea what those symbols mean, I've got an old catalog repro from AG Russell that has similar markings written in pen next to many of the knife images

That's a nice one Randy! A.G.Russell seems to know what that plastic material is. I think a form of acetate; you might ask him.

Found it on Ebay, and picked it up at an antique shop 10 miles from home.



The Schrade Cut Co Number was an 8583. It is 3 3/8" closed. I could not find it in a Schrade Walden Catalog, no pattern # on back of tang.

Charlie and Randy, from what I can find of the "stg" handle material, it appears in the 1934 supplement as celluloid stag handles on a number of knives, and then in the 1936 supplement, it's refered to as fibestos. Don't know what to make of that other than possibly they were making a switch to other materials other than celluloid.

Maybe someone will do an analysis, and answer these questions. It would be nice to see the different "stg" handles side by side. I get the feeling there was some experimentation going on back in the 30s, to achieve a good inexpensive material. Hmmmmmmm

Well, I've posted a group of 3 1/8" Equal end knives, and some 3 3/8 ones as well, so I guess the next logical step is the next size up!
These generally exceed 3 5/8" slightly, closer to 3 11/16", but I'm pretty sure they are from the same size handle dies. Nice variations in 2 and 3 blades.
A couple of Stainless Cut Cos, which I think are relatively rare. A flat bolstered knife with a single backspring which makes a nice slim knife, and of course the "Moose"; both also rarely seen.
Most of these have been posted elsewhere, so if this is too much of a repeat, please let me know; I get carried away with the subject!

i don't have many of these beautiful schrades so it's a real treat to ogle y'alls rare examples. keep em commin!

Not much response, but I've been assured you guys are looking , so here come the biggies. These are about 4 1/4" long, and big hefty Jack knives. I haven't seen a 3 blade yet in this size, but I'm hoping one will turn up some day.
Three Schrade Cut Cos, and a Schrade Walden. The right hand one has the arched tang stamp, the old style hand-picked jigging, and hand hammered pins. Pretty old I reckon.
