Great bone on that little whittler Greg. The Col. Mayes’s book is a great resource for Empire.

According to Goins, the Norvell Shapleigh name ended before 1915. There is a great book out there that Sanders Norvell wrote about his time with Simmons and Shapleigh , and the hardware business in general in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “Forty Years of Hardware “ by Sanders Norvell

I guess I am an incurable Empire collector! I love seeing these wonderful knives posted , such as Joe's and Greg's!! ::tu:: ::tu::
Just back from Oregon yesterday, I dragged these home with me! :)
Both are patterns I have never beheld before - 3 5/16" and 3 9/16" respectively.

Those sure are nice. I'm not a big sleeveboard fan but that one is a beauty that anyone would enjoy owning.

That’s cool Rodger! The use of ivory and horn together is an interesting combination. Put that in the keeper pile!

Greg, Joe, thank you. Greg, I have seen a few Empire barlows over the years but every other one I have seen has wood handles, first one I've come across in bone,does not appear to be common.

Kind of funny how this knife collecting works, 3 weeks ago I had no Empires in my Barlow collection and now I landed my second one. This one I have never seen before with stepped bolster and early style jigging, the jigging kind of radiates out from the center. Knife is in well worn, buffed, pitted condition but still has snap and sharp enough to use.
Last picture shows it with a Hatch English Jack with same style jigging, I'm thinking this Empire is very early.
