The wood on my Remington Model 58 Sportsman was in pretty bad shape - the varnish / shellac was all bubbled and peeling / flaking off. Lots of dents, dings, and scratches. I inherited it from my Uncle...according to the barrel code, the gun was manufactured in January 1958. I decided to re-do the wood last week - and took some before, during, and after pics. I stripped it with Citrustrip and then sanded and used an iron to steam out some of the dents. I then used Tru-oil thinned with mineral spirits for the finish. Used brass wool in between coats. It didn't turn out perfect, but looks better. When it dries for a few more days I will polish it then wax it.

The Model 58 is the grand-daddy of the Remington 1100. I am supposed to go shoot Sporting Clays with some of my old buddies next week....this one will be going along.

There was some good wood hiding under all that wear. Good job bringing it back to life. I can't tell if that's cut checkering or pressed checkering. The 1100 I had back in the '70s was pressed.

I need to do the same to my Mini-14. Flood waters didn't do that stock any favors. I think I'm going to sell it. I just don't care for .223 and the Mini-14 is in the neighborhood of the M-14 but not close enough to suit me. Anyone have any guesses what it should bring? It's the Ranch model.

Jerry, I'm no expert, but I think it has cut checkering, as best I can tell. I am not sure when Remington started with the impressed checkering (maybe early 1960s?)

Unk, You have done a beautiful job on restoring your stock; I owned one of those Sportstman 58's in 12 gauge at one time (bought it off my older cousin). Good shotgun and IMPOSSIBLE to have too many shells when waterfowling - the gas system piston takes up half the magazine tube. That is cut checkering Jerry, the "Diamond" pattern (I think that is what Remington collectors call it). Check your stainless steel, flat spring stock action spring (it's in there with the gas piston) - likely it has broken in to a couple of sections and will hurt reliability of the mechanism (mine had) on ejecting the shells. Numrich/Gun Parts Corp has a replacement made of thick music wire - I bought one and had it shipped a few years ago pretty cheaply (maybe $12 - $15) - perfect replacement and it will never break - all my random ejection issues cleared up with the new spring.

I should have looked closer at those bottom pictures showing the finished project. They make it quite obvious it's cut checkering.

I did have to do a little work on this one. The last time I took it dove hunting (back in the early 90s) it had jammed a lot, and the bolt wouldn't stay open after the last shot....so I stuck it in the safe and haven't messed with it since. I got it out a few months ago and decided to get it up and running again. I dismantled it and cleaned it really good (it was filthy - had probably not been cleaned since the 1960s . I also did some internet research and figured out a tab on the carrier assy was broken off (the tab keeps the bolt open after the last shot). I ordered a new carrier assy from Numrich, and replaced it - then took it to the gun range last month and she ran like a sewing machine.

The springs in mine seem to be in good shape - you can see the action spring along with the gas piston in one of my pics - the one with the parts spread out on the white cloth. Since it's such an old gun - probably not a bad idea for me to pick up a few spare parts, though.

Unk, that style of checkering was used on some of the last years (1948-1949) Remington model 31 pump action shotguns (trap and skeet models) and also on early production years (1950, 51, & ect.) Remington model 870's. Your Remington 58 barrel will fit and work on a Remington model 870 pump action shotgun with no fitting or gunsmithing required. I've also seen the model 870 pump action shotgun barrels used on the model 58 after they had a gas hole drilled in the barrel. The oldest relative of the Remington model 1100 is the Remington model 11, even though it was a recoil operated shotgun. The Remington model 11 is nothing more than a Browning (FN) Auto-5 semi-automatic shotgun copy. Some parts will inter-change between the Remington model 11 and the Browning Auto-5 but a lot of them wont. Thats a good looking job you did with the wood on your Remington model 58. They are nice shotguns and good shooters to boot. Congrats on having a nice shotgun.

Nice Winchester treefarmer. I have a good friend that lost a Winchester 1892 in 32-20 with the octagon barrel due to a drug addict son that stole it and several other of his firearms and traded them for drugs. The only firearm he has found from that stolen bunch was an old S&W .38 Special M&P model. The police didn't find it. He got a phone call from a guy that had heard about his stolen firearms and asked him if one was a S&W revolver. He read the serial number to my friend over the phone and it was a match to his S&W .38 M&P. Cost him $200 to get that revolver back. My friend's son has now moved on to breaking in and stealing from other people now. I figure he's going to end up in a body bag from going in the wrong house when someone is home and end up getting shot. It's a shame what drugs do to people. Stealing is bad enough but I mean to steal from your own Father? Anyone that does that is a no good useless person in my book.

Yep, thats one of them Johnny. You hit the nail on the head. They are great shotguns. Only fault I have with the Remington model 11 and the Browning A-5 is they are bad to crack the forends from the recoil operated barrel. Savage also made a Browning A-5 copy, I think it was called the model 720.

Thanks Aimus. Now I just have to be able to hit something with it . I am taking it to shoot sporting clays with some of my old High School buddies this weekend. They will deal much grief unto me if I show up with a shiny shotgun and then miss everything with it.

....and speaking of the Remington 11 and Browning A5.....I have each of those, too.

My Pop passed the Remington down to me, and the Browning is actually my son's....my father-in-law gave it to him.....it's a real nice Belgian-made magnum 20.

I grew up hunting with that old Remington 11.....totin' that thing around is kinda' like carrying a railroad tie....it's a little weighty. But it sure shot nice - and very dependable - I don't remember ever having it jam....

Great looking humpbacks you have there Unk. I've owned several Remington model 58's. I've found them to be good shooters and very reliable if they are kept clean and maintained well. Good luck with your clay shooting this week end. If things don't go well just blame the shotgun. Thats what I do even though the shotgun fires every shot without a hiccup and my family and friends can hit every time with it. I've even went so far as to accuse them of bending the bead sight on my shotgun just to cause me to miss. Shame on me, Lord I apologize for doing that right there.
