All About Pocket Knives

My guess is that this particular knife was put together close to the end of things. I've never seen a S&M knife or a Queen, for that matter, with the lanyard hole that close to the edge. Why the queen shield is anyone's guess..... Perhaps that's what they had left or it fit in the stag better?
But it sure is beautiful stag and I love the Warncliffe!

That was my thought, too, Dave...cobbled together at the factory in a desperate mad scramble to use up stock before the final fire sale. And that lanyard hole really threw me for a loop, as well; very unusual placement... ...looks like a last-minute rush job IMO...maybe it's not even factory done?? The blade also seems a bit short for the frame, as if it was not specifically intended to go on this pattern (I have no idea what the pattern number is for this knife...it's similar to a Swaybelly/Swayback pattern #01...but not exactly the same.) Steel liners & pins.

Just an unusual birth mark that doesn't distract at all. Love those handles.

Didn't notice it before you posted these new pics Q but they put the lanyard hole thru the bed as opposed to the backspring like every other lanyard hole I've ever seen!
Probably is a good thing the blade seems a little short!

This S&M File & Wire Series #05 Kentucky Shiner is the biggest folder in my collection.
I'm so used to handling knives in the 3½" - 4" range that at 5 5/16" closed, 9 7/16" OAL, this monster feels almost like a short sword!
Not sure what type of wood the handle is but I really like the grain & color.

Q, At a guess, that beautiful wood might be rosewood. My first thought was actually mahogany which seems a remote possibility. I don't know if that wood has ever been used on a knife. If you ever find the answer, kindly share it.

I do believe you are probably correct, Garry. I've never been too good at identifying different types of wood (well...other than Ebony, perhaps), but I laid this Kentucky Shiner next to several other wood handled knives I own (that I know what the wood is) and it's closer to Rosewood than any of the other woods S&M commonly used for knife handles such as Walnut, Cocobolo, Zebra Wood.

Q, I looked up wood samples on google and rosewood came closest. In any event, I think that is a superlative looking knife. A statement I originally made a few years ago and still hold to is that "When S&M gets it right, they get it really right."

Been behind posting knives for my personal collection. Got this Railsplitter in a couple of weeks ago. Some of the nicest Winterbottom bone I’ve ever seen on a S&M, just had to have it.

S&M CPM 154 Stag Barlow

Sometimes a worker would put a knife together that wasnt on the worksheet. He just put one together and home it went. Ive heRD THIS WASNT ALL THAT UNCOMMON.
I thought I had one of those for a while. But then I discovered that there were a few made in each of 2 and maybe 3 different handle materials.

Found a Old S&M New York in my older Knives thought I would post it here and wake up this thread.
The Tang Stamp put's this Knife being made between 1897 to 1902 . Looks like a Lambs Foot Main Blade and a Pen Second

I have a few S & M knives and consider each of them to be some of my best. But my most recent purchase is a S & M #22 Medium Coke Bottle w/Black Micarta handles and an MOP shield. Frankly, I am a little disappointed with the inletting for the shield. It is kind of sloppy. With micarta handles and a Wharncliffe blade, I will probably just put it in my pocket. It is just that my prior experience with S & M set my expectations a bit higher.

I've seen one particular seller on eBay sell a bunch of that exact model and all of them had the poorly inlaid MOP shield. I wonder if they were factory seconds or something.

Here's another S&M #51T Mini Trapper, probably my overall favorite S&M pattern. This one was made in 2002 as an SFO for C&W and features Osage Orange Wood handles. I have one or two other SFO S&M #51s with the C&W double diamond tang stamp and I used to know what the C&W stood for but I can't recall what it is at the moment and I'm too lazy to research it right now (maybe someone here with a better memory will remind me...so I can promptly forget it again ). This is my only one that was made in such a limited number, though: 1 of only 26 according to the etch on the spay blade. Does that qualify it as "rare"?

I love the size and the graceful curves of this pattern. All the S&M 51s I own are superbly built and have nice crisp walk and talk (which is very similar to pre-1980s Case 07s), positive half stops, smooth transitions, grooved/fluted bolsters, and perfectly centered blades with double swedges. About the only "flaw" I can find is the less-than-perfect run up, which is unfortunate but not a deal-breaker for me since it will be a safe queen not a user.
