It was very poorly advertised on ebay. I still had to fight a bit to get it. Blew my mind when I found out it was stainless, because there was no mention of that or the blade etch in the ad. It also had some goo on the main blade in their pictures that made the blade look gapped. LOL. I feel I came out a LOT better off than I hoped for.

I'm not real sure what the bolsters are made of. It's either nickel/german silver or some soft stainless steel. The knife does have brass liners. I'm pretty sure the bail is made from stainless steel so maybe the bolsters are as well.

Now ya' got me wondering. LOL

I did not mean to make you wonder about your knife.
The bolsters kind of looked like aluminum, or something else less shiney than nickel-silver.

LOL, I'm pretty sure it's a softer grade of stainless. I don't know if they had 300 series back then or not or if they did, I have no idea what they called it.

It does look like aluminum in the pics.

I promise and guarantee, I won't lose any sleep wonderin about it.

The bolsters, bail, and shield are all nickle silver. Challenge never used stainless on these parts, however they did make the backsprings out of stainless steel.

Mystery solved!!

The back springs on this one are stainless as well it appears.. There are no rust spots on 'em. inside or out.

This is a Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. compass knife. It has a patent number of 1115780 which was submitted in 1914. The can opener appears to be a later vintage than the original.

Does the knife have a punch blade?

Also the jigged bone is different from what Catt. usually used on their knives.

The knife has about 3/4 of a punch blade. Looks like someone thought it would make a dandy pry bar some time back.
I can't address the jigging as I only own one other Catt. knife.

Were Remington made BS sheath knives usually stamped and etched on the back side of the blade?

Were all BS sheath knives marked that way?

Or, do I just not know the front from the back when it comes to straight knives?

Don't mean to sound ignorant, but sheath knives are not within my Baliwick.

All the old Remington Boy Scout sheath knives were identified as such by an acid etch, like the one posted here. Usually this was done on the front side of the knife. The front tang had the Remington name and the reverse tang had the model designation, in this case RH51.

The knife pictured here has the etch on the reverse side, probably a factory mistake, the ones I have are all etched on the front side.

Also, Remington did not stamp the blade or tang with the official scout logo like the later knives were done. The Western sheath knives had the tang stamped as an official boy scout knife, and the blade face was acid etched.

Yeah the compass thing seems to be a real problem with these knives, they fall right out
