All About Pocket Knives

This was my dinner tonight, prime rib to celebrate the Duck's victory in the Rose Bowl!
I think prime rib is good luck food for the new year.

You got that right, Ray! My wife cooked New Years dinner for the family today. Baked ham, with black-eyed peas, cheese grits, greens, sliced tomatoes, cornbread, peach pie, iced tea, and football! Texas New Years tradition at our house.

Dale, that's a great celebration meal. The Ducks played a game worthy of celebrating! I haven't tried prime rib for New Years, or luck either, but I could probably be persuaded.

Our New Year's dinner consisted of: Sauerkraut w/pork ribs, mashed potatos, corn (to satisfy my German heritage) and black-eyed peas w/ham and corn bread (Souther style, not sweet) to satisfy my wife's Southwest Louisiana Irish/French heritage and apple and chocolate pie.

Tom I'm gettin hungry just reading about that meal;

We enjoy the traditional Southern New Year's Day dinner, there is room for debate on the greens. We love collards, we love turnip greens w/roots, we love mustard greens and regular cabbage. It was a big boiled cabbage head this time, chipped up like collard greens for yesterday's dinner (noon meal). With that Miss Joy had prepared Black eyed peas, rice, some fried pork jowl sliced thin, a nice oven roasted pork shoulder (Boston Butt), a bunch of fried cornbread and a big ol' jug of sweet tea. Oh yeah, there were some desserts, but who needs dessert after all that good stuff.
The secret is to run the company off early in the afternoon so there will be sufficient leftovers for a day or so. Watch football and eat the pies, don't let on like there is real food in the frige . All this stuff gets better on the next day.
There's still some pork shoulder for sandwiches tomorrow, made with Dukes Mayonaise, Jerry !

Everything was sounding larapin good until you got to that. You are one sick puppy Phil.

Tonight I chicken-fried some pheasant I shot up in Kansas last month.....along with mashed taters, sweet peas, and gravy. Good stuff!

...and last week we had black-eyed peas, ham, and cornbread for New Years day.

Truth be told, I'm not a football fan at all anymore. But If push comes to shove, even though I have no confidence it will happen, I do hope the Bears win.

Even back in the late 60s, the 70s & 80s when I was a huge football fan (Oakland Raiders & "Da Bears" in that order) I just couldn't abide the Cowboys. And I don't know why.

Kinda like the irrational dislike I have for New York teams from any sport (especially the Yankees).

Jerry, they have a show called "A Football Life" on the NFL channel where they profile old players. They did a segment recently on Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers.

If you haven't seen it, it's a really good series. I highly recommend it.

I have been taping those and watching as time permits. I promise I have not seen a bad one yet. I even watched the one about Ray Lewis, Baltimore linebacker, retired. I really was prepared to continue disliking him but came away with a much more tolerant attitude towards him.

Unk, I was/am a George Blanda fan. Like Cubs pitcher, Gregg Maddux he outlasted everyone.

Played quarterback for Bear Bryant at Kentucky, entered the NFL draft in 1949 and retired in 1976.

Yeah, he was in his 40s when he was back-up quarterback for the Raiders and kicking field goals. Saw him kick a 53 yarder once and that was back when anything over 45 yards was considered a long field goal. 48 years old when he played his last game.

Started his career with the Chicago Bears in 1949. Died in 2010 just ten days after he turned 83. (I had to look all that up.) What a guy.

I remember Blanda. He always seemed like an unlikely hero to me. He just got it done. Made football fun back in the day.

This thread has bee idle a while, so I'll revive it.

Tonight Valerie fried up the catfish and bluegill that we caught Sunday afternoon. Then she made a skillet of cornbread, green peas, and roasted squash, red taters, and onions. Fit for a king I tell ya.

Now that's what I call a supper! Fried catfish and bluegills are always good
If y'all had come by Starvation Plantation this evenin', you would have figured we were a pair of vegans. We had 'mater sandwiches and sliced cukes out of the garden washed down with a big glass of well water.
