M.M. I have found some of the best things in life come out of "The Great White North" (oops! can I still say "Great White" ::paranoid:: ) Besides the Crown Royal... ::hmm:: One of my favorite axes is an "Ardex" made in Toronto I belive... ::hmm::
As far as I'm concerned you can still say "Great White", cuz only the folks south of the Equator wouldn't know it refers to snow, not skin color! They make Grohmann knives in Nova Scotia/Canada also, but you forgot the most important contribution "TGWN" has made to the world, ME! lol! 8)
When you say Great White here in Australia we think shark. When we go to the ocean for a swim we think Great White but we spend more time look at white pointers.

I know prices go up... but "Come on man!" (To quote a "real genius"). Everybody selling can't stop talking 'bout how much one "just like the one" on their table just sold for on "Gun broker " :x So they want the same price!
Two weekends ago I was at our local gun and knife show, it's a pretty big show for a small town with folks coming from all over the state and country. As soon as I walked in I got the one and only deal that was to be had there, a 1977 Marlin 336 Texan (straight stock) 30-30 in mint condition for a price that made me about rip my pocket off. I was shocked.

But as I walked around toting it and looking at knives, every one wanted me to price it. This one knife dealer who had some old CASE and Schrade knifes I was interested in, was especially interested in my new Marlin. I had asked him the price of a knife that literally two gun shows ago I could have bought two for $35-$40 a piece and like a dummy didn't. His asking price was $125! I politely declined and then he asked me how much I wanted for the Marlin.

So I shot him the going gun broker price and I thought he was going to choke. He had the nerve to say, "I used to buy those for $150."

To which I replied, "Just like those knives you want $125 for that I used to buy for $30." He didn't say much then, and I kept walking.

Yep. Thankfully my LGS pays no attention to gun broker. They'll still trade and sell by the "book" and not gun broker. And they do a lot of business too.

Maybe he’s a selfish clown, maybe he’s got mouths to feed, maybe he’s just not motivated to sell quickly, maybe he’s thinking, “once these ones sell, I’ll have to buy more…”

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we’re in an inflationary set of economic conditions. That always means prices will rise, but some prices will rise faster/farther than others. Merchandise that 1) is no longer being made, and 2) has a high perceived demand, is going to rise faster than that which does not.

There are perhaps fewer deals out there now, and perhaps not on the items you want, but somebody is finding and buying them. The Marlin is proof of that. And like the colonel says, he coulda bought those knives two shows ago, but didn’t. There’s no guarantee of getting what you want at the price you want, but you can improve your chances by doing what he did - going out and looking with cash in hand.

Markets are fluid, that’s a cold hard fact. As long as participation is voluntary, and consists of a large number of on-the-spot decisions of a large number of people, there’s no getting around that. You might as well call the sun selfish for refusing to shine at night.

Someday, when we’re all gone to our final rewards, there’ll be nobody left who even knows what the old knives are, much less wants them. Prices will fall, and our grandkids will be passing up 30 dollar Remingtons and 150 dollar Marlins in favor of newer and “better” stuff.

“Now that we have brain-interfaced molecular disruptors, who would want that old Marlin? Pay me 25 bucks, and I’ll take it home as a doorstop.”

Yep, it’s tough to make accurate predictions, especially about the future. But we don’t need to waste mental energy being mad at selfish clowns.

Here’s one way to look at it: all sellers are engaged in continuous market testing. The seller of that Marlin, his market test is completed. If he has another one to sell, he’ll bump it up.

The knife seller, his market test is still in progress. Next Jan, if he hasn’t sold any yet, he might try to accelerate his results by dropping the price. That snapshot, times many thousands or millions, makes an overall market for gun show commodities. Every patron hopes his own timing is successful (however he defines success).

As long as I can, I will try and buy decent birthday and Christmas knives for my Grandsons, sometimes new and sometimes great used ones. I've been blessed to be able to buy the AAPK knives for quite a few years, but my personal buying is mostly limited to junk shops, flea markets and the shallow end of the Bay. :)
I am amazed at the prices of used knives, but I'm also amazed at the prices in the grocery store. Miss Joy asked me to pick up a bag of general-purpose flour and a pound of salted butter when I finally made it to the barbershop this afternoon. The haircut was $15, a pound of butter, 4 sticks was $5.08 and the 5-pound bag of flour was $4.78.
Bottom line is the current economy is affecting most everything we buy. I used to get all excited when an old Queen or Case would become available and stretch out and make a bid. No longer do I do that. Some have to do without, some cut back, some folks don't seem to be concerned with the economy. ::shrug::
In a tight economy our priorities will surface very quickly.

We used to have knife and gun shows four times a year locally. The guy that operated those shows shut them down before the covid hit. We don't have many other places to sell around here so I've cut my knife buying down to the point that unless it is a really good deal I just pass them up. I have way too many already. I do still look around the local pawn shops but the prices they are asking now are way out of range for mostly used knives. I did stop at one pawn shop earlier this week just to look around. He had picked up about a dozen or so Case Hobos and boy was he proud of them. He had four in stag and was asking $350.00 each for them and the others were Amber Jig Bone, for which he wanted $169.00 each. All were new old stock with boxes but that's way out of my price range if I'm going to make anything on the re-sale. But as long as there are folks who don't mind paying these prices, not just for knives, but for everything else that I'd consider non-essential, then they are not going to cut back on prices. It looks like we may not see any relief for some time. Rick

Marco, sometimes I’m a selfish clown myself, maybe it just struck to close to home.

My intended point was that people are how they are, and do what they do. Sometimes we have what it takes to make a deal, sometimes we don’t. Especially with strangers, we know (and care) so little about each other that in the long run, it doesn’t matter whether we make this particular transaction or not, there are many more opportunities coming up soon.

I’m a kinda amateur student of economics though, and I do get wordy about it sometimes. No hard feelings, I hope.

I understand Parker, and I apologize for jumping you like I did. ::handshake:: I'd been staring at my screen all day and I was tired and hungry, so when I read the quote again for the 2nd or 3rd time it just hit me wrong. I don't usually come down on folks for being who they are, but in the case which the Col described it just seemed like the guy was being arrogant and smug and it bothered me. The correct thing to do would have been taking a look at myself and trying to understand why his actions bothered me, instead of focusing on him and what I perceived he was doing wrong. Some days it's easier to lay blame rather than look at my part in the situation, but it certainly isn't the right way to handle it. Of course there's no hard feelings, we're livin' and learnin' each day so we can chock it up to a learning experience as far as I'm concerned. This poor thread has been hijacked soooo badly I'm embarrassed! 8)

Unfortunately, I haven't backed off yet - five so far this year, although I swore I wouldn't do this. But then again, To salve my conscience somewhat, it's a rare occasion if I ever go over a hundred for a knife. The wife and I are planning a big vacation later this year, so I GOTTA cut down. Hard to do when I see all these knives on the Forum and the new stuff coming out this year! ::facepalm::
