I started collecting boxes in the early 1980's when not many were paying attention to them. The old boxes were made to be a one-and-done, just to get the groups of a 1/2 dozen or so knives to get from the manufacturer to the sales point. They weren't meant to survive or be used like the knives were.

In all the boxes I have owned there have been a precious few times when I actually managed to get any accompanying original knife with the old box. Herer are just two examples along with a picture of group of smaller boxes I have in a display at home.

Great post, Wayne, some really nice boxes. The one between the Catt and Thomaston boxes on the bottom row caught my eye. I can't make out the name though, what is it?

The small box that is 4th from left at the bottom is W.R. Humphreys & Co. LTD. Haddon Works box.

A disposable item for sure, thankfully thrifty people put them aside or re-used them to store buttons, nails, etc. as evidenced by several old boxes I have that were relabeled as such.

I agree finding a box full of or partially full is a rarity, someone along the way would use them or sell them if found, but they do exist and I have a few in my collection.
