As a relative newly to knife collecting, what's the actual difference between a whittler and a stockman?

Bushfire, I think the simple answer to the difference between a Stockman and Whittler is blade configuration. I copied this from another site:
Whittler: Master blade (Clip) occasionally Spear runs off two springs which may be tapered or divided. Minor blades usually Pen and Coping run off their own springs (which are the two that bear he Master blade). Sometimes small Clip blade too.

Stockman: Master (almost always Clip, seldom Spear) runs off its own spring. Other blades are usually crinked off the second spring, generally Sheepfoot/Spey sometimes Pen replaces the Spey. Three thick versions exist (Buck for instance) which have 3 springs one for each non-crinked blade.

I’d never taken notice of the spring configuration. Seeing them advertised sometimes they were all but indistinguishable to me. I have seen a few with a lamb or sheepsfoot as the main blade sold as a whittler, whether that’s a true one or not I have no idea.

I’m going to look for a whittler or stockman for whittling. I quite enjoy it and to date have used a fixed blade which doesn’t allow for finer detail.

Recently picked up this Bostwick Braun from Mr. Roger Cunningham.

Very nice bones, that is some sweeeeeeeeet color. Nice uneven jigging too. Never heard of Bostwick Braun either, but looks like a beauty. I like the obscure brands that turn out to be great pieces like that one.

The photos are very well done, don't sell yourself short, you made the knife look great. Love that kind of background and the sweet knife ices the cake. Recently, this pocket knife arrived and it now becomes my latest example to join this topic or thread. It is also the latest example to join my general pocket knife collection. It came in a group or lot of pocket knives that I purchased. I did NOT buy the group or lot to obtain this particular pocket knife. However, it did turn out to be a keeper. It is a KINGSTON, three blades, one tang stamp, 3 1/4" closed, stockman, pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "KINGSTON (over) U.S.A." The main blade has no half stop. It has a soft opening and closing snap. The secondary blade has no half stop. It has a soft opening and closing snap. The third blade has no half stop, but has a good opening and closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. It did NOT need any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off.

Found this little guy in a box of miscellaneous junk. 2-3/4", German Boker, rosewood. 2 blades, I guess it counts as a mini stockman? Won't brag on the price. J.O'.

Great find, J.O.! That is a nice little nugget to pull out of a box of junk! I have the same knife in Rosewood that I bought back in the 80's, makes a good little carry.
