I kind of thought it would be that. But if I'm not mistaken there are a couple of brands in that group that are not "made in USA." I thought it might be that RR's were not on the same quality level as CASE, GEC, Camillus etc. or all the above. Anyway it is what it is and at least we have a spot to share about Rough Riders. I have been kind of surprised at how this particular thread has just kept going for five years. I think there may not have been so many Rough Rider fans back then. Maybe now there are enough to justify a sub-forum. But a sub-forum for a specific brand is not an unmixed blessing. I used to post occasionally in the Fight'n Rooster forum. Seems like those threads just died real quick. Maybe only a small percentage of folks were interested in that specific brand and most folks never looked?

When I first came to this forum I did not have a clue just how much some members dislike China Knives. I am very grateful that no one took me to task for some of my early posts where I showed off some of my China made knives in the general forum. But once I got a clue I pretty much keep my China Knives in the Chinese Factory Manufactured Knives

I hate to break up the gab-fest with a knife but this little beauty came in today's mail. Yeah, it's out in left field but something about it entranced me. I think it was the peace sign shield that pulled the trigger.

Oh, Jerry. Just seeing that knife makes me want a group hug!

I have a very fancy 4 1/8" RR Trapper with pink bone with raised scroll work on bolsters and caps and file worked springs. At first it looks rather 'lady-like' but it's super sharp blades could field dress a deer with ease. It is a real Beauty. I will post pictures when the sun comes up.

Rough Ryder's marketing is excellent. Below is a good example of 'Unisex" knives.

Here is my fancy pink 'Rough Rider' Trapper, except i see it is branded as "Colt". There are very similar knives that are marked 'Rough Rider', all from same factory and made for the same USA businesses.

Absolutely not. The pictures were uploaded from my 16 yr old Pentax Optio camera and then cropped to size and posted here. The colors are accurate on my monitor, i.e. what i see in these pictures is exactly what i see when i look at this knife.
Same is true for every picture i have ever posted. I have no need or desire to deceive.
As remarkable as it's looks are, it's ability to function is equally remarkable. Springs are firm, snaps crisp and blades are ultra sharp. I have no doubt that i could fully field dress & skin a whitetail deer using just one of the blades (either one) and it would still be sharp when i was done. I have done this with an RR Trapper Series, Trapper knife and Pinky is every bit as good a knife, possibly better.
Pink conjures up 'girly' but Pinky could out cut most of the 'manly' looking knives regardless of price.
I urge the deer hunters here to use an RR folding knife, Traditional style on your next deer. You will be amazed how slick fast and easy it will go.
Note: only applies to the Traditional style folding RR knives. The RR fixed blades and tactical style are nothing special, must be made by a different manufacturer

They are sharp, and do keep an edge, on that you are most correct.

More people should use their RR knives. They are the PERFECT user knife: cut super well, edge hold far longer than expected, and if you loose it, no big deal, you can get another one exactly like it for just a few dollars.
You only get half the pleasure by looking at and handling it. Get full pleasure and use it. Then post back here to tell us how amazed you are.

I want to make it clear that this was intended to be a (bad) joke. I do NOT think this picture (or any other picture on AAPK) has been doctored in Photoshop. The I put at the end was intended to show that I thought that RR was a very cool knife - but in re-reading what I wrote, I now realize that was not at all fair to KJ. My apologies!

Here's a new pickup, and my first one-hand opening RR, the RR1129 Linerlock Trapper. Been wanting to try the Case Trapperlock, but the cheapest I've seen used examples is $40, and a new one is close to a hundred bucks. The Rough Rider, shipped from a Blue Ridge associated dealer was $15. SMKW does have it listed as "OUT OF STOCK" and probably discontinued. RR is worse than GEC for short, sprint-runs. At least they don't cost as much! The spelling on the box, tang, and shield is "RYDER" meaning it is not that old of a release. There was also one in smooth bone with the Remington-like acorn shield.

This knife has no backspring. It may look like there's one, but it's basically just a spacer.

Here's my problems with it.

The handle material needs to be G-10 or Delrin, but not bone. The handle at the linerlock is unreinforced, and being bone, may crack or even break completely off if dropped. For a work knife, it's also gripper, and thus better.
And, this is both good and bad. The blade tang has a detent cut into it so that the linerlock will catch the blade at half-open when closing, but not opening. I guess as a safety measure to keep the blade from closing on a finger when shutting it, and to keep it from opening up on its own if dropped. It's also somewhat annoying when opening it. At first, I thought my knife was defective, but looking closer, it's intentional.

Your liner lock Trapper is a well thought out knife design. The bone might be tougher than you think. I have dropped an RR folder with similar looking jigged bone onto a tile floor and no cracks.
My bet is the more you carry/use it, the more you will like it.
