Show Us Your Camillus Knives!

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Do you have the suggested retail for the CCC-3?
That price list itself is a treasure.

I'm pretty sure the C3 is what you're calling a CCC-3.

Thanks for the price list! ::ds:

One large box with sheath in the display cabinet is marked C3, the other smaller box is marked CCC-3. Not sure but will investigate further.

Thanks again.

EDIT: MYSTERY SOLVED - The first catalog page after the cover page lists the C1 through C4 and has the CCC3 just below it, but the CCC3 is not on the price list. Hmmmmm. 5 knives in the display cabinet, 4 on the price list. More mystery.

There ya go. That's why I added the catalog. Sticks in the brain cage longer when you figure it out yourself. ::nod::

Keep in mind, there are catalog numbers, stock numbers and sometimes even production numbers, not necessarily all the same but still for the same product.

And to make things even more confusing Camillus even had an internal numbering system for their knives.
A #72 Whittler was known by a different number inside the factory! ::doh::

Vit -- Your link doesn't work.

I stand corrected. That's what happens when you (the royal 'you', meaning me) start running your mouth with too little knowledge under your belt. Please accept my apologies for steering you in the wrong direction.

I took a closer look at the catalog and the C-3 & CCC-3 are not even the same pattern much less handle material. I found this list of Camillus Classic Cartridge series knives. Stole it from another knife forum.

1991/CCC-1 -- Large Bullet trapper with 45-70 Gov't cartridge shield
1992/CCC-2 -- "Bush Pilot" style equal end moose/muskrat with 30-30 Winchester cartridge shield
1993/CCC-3 -- Toothpick with 7mm Mauser cartridge shield
1994/CCC-4 -- Large Copperhead Jack with .257 Roberts cartridge shield
1995/CCC-5 -- Baby Bullet Trapper with 45 Long Colt cartridge shield
1996/CCC-6 -- Bullet Tracker lockback with Remington 44 Magnum cartridge shield
1997/CCC-7 -- Camp/Scout with .270 Winchester cartridge shield

Dale -- The "internal numbering system" was what I was referring to when I said "Production Numbers".

Once again, please let me apologize for shooting off my mouth and firing blanks. BUT, maybe if it makes this information stick in your mind better, it was worth it. I know it will for me.

Thanks Vit. That's much better. I notice the web site has a Russian URL. Is that your web site? I bookmarked that bad boy.

I have a 22LR6 from the Rimfire Classic Series. Maybe I should look for the rest. I also have a Yello-Jacket with a 22LR6 main blade. Wonder how rare those are.

Sometime in the 1980s they dropped the Sabre grind completely. Cost cutting move???? Were they already in trouble and looking for any way they could shave production costs?? That's speculation of course.

Perhaps your assumptions are true

"In the 1980's Camillus lost a lot of business. Buck Knives was the largest customer and their annual purchases were at $2,000,000-$3,000,000 per year in the 1970's and in the 1980's their annual purchases dropped off dramatically. Kabar was also a large customer and their annual purchases also were reduced. Camillus, who was a major supplier to the U.S. Military, lost some of the contracts for the Pilot Survival knife (model #5733), U.S. Marine Corps knife (model #5684) and the MC-1 Paratrooper's knife. During 1981 and later (this lasted for several months) knife orders were down and the factory only worked every other week. The factory would work a week and the next week the factory was closed. I was working in the office then so I worked every week but had to take a reduction in pay. With the downturn in business Camillus acquired a significant amount of debt. With declining sales the company had to borrow money to pay expenses like wages, buy materials, insurance, electric, etc."

:)
"Jim did bring in some new customers like Remington and Moore-Maker that helped offset the loss in other business. After Camillus started making Remington knives in 1982 we used some of the same tooling to offer some new patterns in the Camillus line. We would make a knife for Remington and the next year we would offer the same pattern in the Camillus line. Many of the the Camillus Classic Cartridge knives were made on the same tooling as the Remington. Jim also signed agreements with several top knife designers like Darrell Ralph, Jerry Fisk and Bob Terzoula. We started making the Becker knives designed by Ethan Becker. CUDA knives were also introduced. During the 1990's and later Camillus offered many new knives and it was interesting to see all the new items being made."
