This probably does not belong in this thread. I wanted to know more about this newer Schrade trapper. It is tang stamped Schrade U.S.A. 294 on two lines it is 3 7/8" closed,delrin handles marked Schrade on shield. I showed it to a knife friend in my area and he said that it was some what unusual. It would normally have a #293 with this size and blade combo. My friend is very good with Schrades. He said that Schrade did some things like this. I know that this is low on the totem pole on this thread. Just wanting some insite to Schrades workings.

Stockman, no Schrade is too low on the totem pole, feel free to ask away about anything! I believe you're right about the model number, the 294 should have a pen blade as the secondary. Since the master is the same on both knives, either someone got them mixed up or there was a shortage of 294 blades and these were substituted (this is most unlikely though). Another possibility is that your knife was made with some spare parts at one time or the other (possibly near the end as they were putting anything and everything together just to make a complete knife for the auction). Nice knife though, and a unique example to boot!

Thanks ea42, I no very little about Schrades, but hanging around AAPK for 3 or 4 years I have started to watch them. My collection is mostly Case and old Remingtons. Back to the knife I asked about your answer is almost word for word as my knife friends was. I would say you both know your Schardes.

Here is a pic of a Schrade Walden Delrin handled 294, with a main blade very similar to the early bone Schrade Cut co's but without the fancy swedge. Don't know why Schrade had some identical to the 293 Main blade stamped 294, as the knife in my picture was the last real 294 mentioned in Schrade catalogues as far back as the late 1960's.

I'm sure it was a "low bid" for the contract to build them. We use "low bid" on ALL of our contracts where I work. More often than not, we get what we pay for.

Thought I would post my new, vintage Schrade Walden 804 Whittler I received yesterday, beautiful peachseed jigged handles, I think I'm smitten! will definitely try to acquire more in the future, Thanks Charlie!

Well....just got this eekBay item from the PO Box,
Looks like it might be another Schrade goofup at the factree.
I've seen others mention mismatched parts were not a rarity at Ellenville.
Auction did have good enough pics I should have spotted the discrepancy.
May be why I won it at a decent price, other bidders can see better.
1983 Heritage 2661G barlow with a SC506 blade.
Means I don't get the heritage tang stamp, mirror polished mark side or the
'Everlastingly Green' blade etch.
Everything else looks right for an '83 2661G, smoove bone handles,
coined edge dated shield, fluted bolsters...think I'll keep it.
Should look better once I get it spiffed up and pics outside...I hope.
Don't think these have gone up enough to encourage FAKE ones yet.

It already (kinda) fooled yours truly and apparently
my seller as well. I asked when he bought it, explaining
my two theories as 1)if he bought it in 1983 probably a
disgruntled assembly person @ Schrade or 2)purchased
after 2004 might be a parts knife...a little Heritage here,
a lil SC506 there...(I heard a rumor )
He replied "ohNo! Argggggg I got it on ebay a few years ago!"
My original H2661G is more of an olive drab green, and edges of handles are more rounded. Most Schrades I've seen are very consistent knife to knife. So for the finishing work to be this different has me more suspicious about it's post closing assembly possibilities. At least whoever did it knows how to center the blades. Had enough tarnish and box liner is dry rotted enough to be from 1983 though.
Cleaned up pretty good, I can sand the handle edges later.
Seller wanted to send me complete refund and me keep the knife, but I told him it wan't broken or from Chiner so 100% rebate might be too much.

Ya know Wosey, I actually REALLY like that one, nice crisp swedges and spine, and the more squared off handles make it look more like a real vintage barlow (they never bothered to polish those old working knives ) i'd say you unwittingly got a real prize!

Thanks Eric, I agree. As I mentioned before, despite it's mysterious origins I'll keep it. The spine not only has crisper edges (wider too) than Heritage blade, it also has swedge both sides while Heritage is just mark side. And squared handle edges do make it feel a bit larger than the 'real' 2661G.
I think it is a right handsome piece of cutlery just as it is.
Least we know it IS green and it IS a barlow.

LT, could you tell me what year Schrade celebrated their 95th anniversary?
