Very nice Ken, ya just gotta love them Schrades don't you.
I been into knives most of my life but only really started to be serious about putting a collection together last couple of years. Schrades/ Camillus and any older style ones that catch my eye.
I reckon Dale should write a Schrade book, complete with pictures / info on all the Schrades from wo to go.
You have some really nice ones I've seen posted on these forums.

Hi Gary,
The old 881 was new back in 1971. That was the year I Discovered Schrade knives.
The Old 881 is also not for sale, it’s the best knife I have in my collection.
It is still a nice knife; I have been using it every day for the past 40 years.
That old knife started me collecting Schrade knives.
When the Factory closed down I put all my collecting into items sold by Schrade from 2000-2004.
Today I have quite a number of items, made by the old Schrade Company.

That would be my display knife love em, I like the 34ot+8ot for hunting with a 158ot for capeing and pelvic bone, I'm not a fan of the gut-hook

Hi Gary,
I like the 34OT and I love the 34OTSS, I am always looking for the 34OT Stainless modle.
Last week, I found an 8OT Anniversary modle for my collection; they have become hard to find now-a-days.

A friend give me the "Badger Anniversary modle" (note: the Old Schrade Co. had them made in China)
I have never seen an other like it. Last week I found two Old Schrade SX4 Bagers.

Pre-bankruptcy Schrade (Swinden key construction) 1980's ? There were 3 patterns made, a sharpfinger fixed blade, a trapper, and this iteration of an 8OT.

This is my latest Schrade purchase. I got it a week ago at an estate sale. Originaly I bought it with the intentions of taking it to the antique fairs that I participate in in a month or two from now. The more I handled the knife the more I got attached to it. It's a pocket keeper. Schrade 123 OT, and the edge doesn't appear to have been touched ! I like it!! Dale H.

The Duck knife, was only sold in 2004 - quite hard to find.

Here is a Schrade #832 Open Stock I got in trade recently. The length closed is 3- 5/16”.
This is obviously a well used knife but it still has very good snap. The catalogs first show the 832 in 1953 (with Propwood handles) and a federal type shield.
The 1957 catalog shows the handles as Wondawood.
The 1965 Line catalog shows the WW (Wondawood) code beside the picture of the 832.
The following year (1966) the codes were dropped from the Line catalog. From that point on one had to guess at the handle material by the picture shown in the Line or Short Line catalogs.
In the 1972 Line catalog the picture of the 832 changes. It shows a lighter colored handle with an oval shield. It appears this way through the 1977 Line catalog.
By 1978 the 832 is no longer listed in the Schrade Line catalog.

It would appear (judging by the pictures in the Line catalogs); my knife was made between 1972 and 1977. However, it has the Schrade-Walden tang stamp which would narrow the date to 1972 or early 1973. Basically there is an 18-month period of time in which this knife was likely made.

The handle material on my knife is definitely not wood. It appears to be wood grained Delrin.


After further research I found this pic in a flyer circa 1972 or 1973. I would appreciate any further info anyone has on this knife.

Not much more info Dale, but I have a couple similars. A Schrade NY 832, and a Schrade Walden 234K.





I think these were Schrades unsuccessful attempts to make Delrin look like bone. This handle style was not used for very long.

This is my latest acquisition from an estate sale earlier this morning. It's marked Schrade/Walden, Mdl.#861, slip premium stockman. The blades show very little wear. The knife has nickel silver bolsters and federal shield. Outside of a little cleaning, it is straight as a whistle and ready to go to the antique show I'm doing. I'm a happy camper with it. Just picked up this Schrade Cut. Co. electrician. It's the 3 5/8" variety, which I greatly prefer to the larger 3 3/4" variety of WWII vintage. The only problem is that the master is slow. I don't know why the handles look like they have white paint on them, it must be an artifact of the lighting because in person the white spots are actually either the coarse grain of the wood or little dings on the handles.

The knife itself looks like an old Empire and I thought it might have been a contract knife but on a comparison with an Empire that I own, there are actually numerous differences. I guess the shield threw me off since I always associate this shield shape with Empires.

I added a picture of the Empire for comparison (it's the bottom one). You can see some of the differences in the picture (placement of pins), however, some of the differences you can't see. The Empire has the extended backspring, and a different locking mechanism (you depress the master blade to unlock the screwdriver), finally, the nail nick on the master on the Empire is on the opposite side of the blade from the Schrade.

Here is a 41OT I got yesterday.
These are pretty hard to find.
They were only made from 1971-1973.

Another one of my pets.

Just love these, when I see one just tempted to buy it.

Gary, That's a nice looking 34OT you have there! I just came in from my shop where I have a little project going on with a predecessor ( a MDL. 834 ) of your knife. My wife and I went to another estate sale, and I was rooting thru tackle boxes in the garage. I managed to find 4 more knives but boy are they in rough shape ( badly left to rust ). The 834 had the main blade rusted open, but I finally managed to break it free and wire wheeled the tang stamp. Thus a Schrade / Walden 834. The other 2 blades are going to be a chore to free up, but it will be a fun project. I only paid $2.50 for the 4 knives, so if something breaks I'm not out much. Anyway's, once again, nice old 34OT your showing! Bull ( Dale H. )

Dale H, That was a good pickup. We don't have those sort of sales over here.
I sometimes get a couple of castoffs from second hand shops here but not many from garage sales.
I try to pick up anything/any brand at the local sales mainly for later if I get a couple, probably make 1 out of 2/3.
Got a heap of 34's, just waiting for one day to fix them, mostly lots of blade play or worn out.

Interesting knife, Ken. Do you think it was work in process when the factory closed? I have an unfinished wood handled Camillus from the bankruptcy sale that I keep as a reminder that all things pass, even great knife makers.

Gary, Good news to report! I managed to get the remaining two blades on the 834 open and the rust removed. It'll never be any more than a tackle box knife though. I'll give it to my son, he seems to conveniently without a knife when it comes time to clean the fish . It's been nice chatting with you Gary.
