Keen Kutter was first used as a knife brand by Simmons Hardware Company in 1870. The trademark was used on the highest quality tools and cutlery Simmons offered.
Here is a pretty rare WWI era Keen Kutter military folding knife. I have seen several like the one I posted on page 5 but this is the first one this size and without the marlin spike blade.
I collect Keen Kutters and have just received these two over the last week or so. I thought the contrast between the two was interesting so I'm posting them here.
The small knife is shown in an old catalog cut with an etch "The High School Girl", hard to imagine this deadly weapon (it's about 4" long open) being marketed to the young women of America.
The top knife in contrast is almost 4" long closed.
Jerryd, That knife looks suspiciously like a Camillus 72 pattern Anytime I see those little horns sticking out of the top of the KK wedge, I immediately think Camillus. If the pattern number is stamped does it have the underlined "K", that's also a pretty sure sign of Camillus manufacture.
Mark, it looks very much like a Camillus. It has the matchstrike pull on the main blade, the dark brown synthetic handles like Camillus used for a while and the handle pins are spaced farther from the bolsters than a Schrade/Ulster/Imperial.
After looking at the model number some more with the 45x, it looks more like there may be a "6" after the "8" so that would make it a 786 instead of 78. As far as the a line under the "K" in KEEN, I'd have to say no. If it's the 'K' in Kutter, the tang stamp is so faint and worn I can't tell.
Is it obvious I know nothing about Keen Kutters?
Ya know, I'll bet somewhere around 90% or more of the 72 clone tang stamps (the ones not made by Schrade/Ulster/Imperial) were made by Camillus.
Forged on the anvil of discipline.

"The #72 pattern has got to be pretty close to the perfect knife."

Remington,New York Knife and Case all made a 5 blade sowbelly.NYKC did a lot of contract work but that bone don`t look like NYKC.But punch could be NYKC and they also ringed a lot of their bolsters. So??????
I have picked up a couple more knives over the last few months, so I thought I would revive this thread and show how my collection is growing. What I like best about these knives are the many different shield styles, and the various handle materials used. It makes for interesting collecting to say the least! Also, unlike case knives, you can find pretty decent examples at a fraction of the cost. Thanks, Tim
