All About Pocket Knives

I read somewhere--can't find it again--of a 30-day Peanut Challenge. The concept was to carry a Peanut (or similar sized knife) for 30-days, and during that time make a list of the functions for which a larger blade is required. It went on to say that about 98% of tasks requiring a knife can be performed with a Peanut, and half of the remaining 2% probably shouldn't be performed with a knife anyway.

I've been carrying a Peanut daily since 9 February, and have yet to come up with a task that requires a larger blade. Of course I'm not skinning deer, and I'll take along my Sod Buster the next time I go camping to slice vegetables.

I checked with Case, and asked how long the Peanut has been in production. The answer came a few days later, and said that the Peanut has been in the line up since the beginning (or close thereto), and that they have some that date back to 1905. But a few style changes have been made since the first ones. I presume they meant the slight S-curve or other minor tweaks.

In this age of modern technology, I have a front pocket dedicated to my smart phone, and the other for change and small bills. I don't have room for a mid-sized or large pocket knife unless I wear one on my belt. The Peanut rides in the watch pocket of my jeans, and I am not aware of its presence unless I have a need for it. For me it's the perfect size.

When my father passed away, my boss gifted me this peanut with the flag on it. It's a 2011 Case Peanut. Me and my father both served in the Navy and my boss thought I would like a Case knife with a flag on it. I do. It's a great little knife that I'm proud to own.

I don’t have a case peanut in my pocket today , but I am carrying a Western States .”curious “ if case had any peanut patterns with a match strike? I do have one case peanut and a peanut contract knife made for Clauss .I will try and dig them up and post them when I get back home .I put the peanut in my pocket today because I’m on my way to Branson Missouri for a weekend get away and needed a small knife to accompany me .

If you going to Branson, try and eat one of Billy Gail's pancakes!! Its as big as a man hole cover. Just order one, that's all you will need. And that is a beautiful knife you have there!!

I would have to try some of that catfish.

Here are a couple older Case peanuts. A Case LP saber ground Bradford in stag with the pattern number on the back of the pen blade and a Tested LP flat ground in slick black with diamond shield both blades Tested stamped. Blades are full tight and snappy.

My only Case Peanut. I believe it to be a 2009 jigged bone, but I am far from being a Case expert.

Case wasn’t much on “match strike” pulls, on peanuts or any other pattern. If you ever see one I’d be suspicious. Not saying it never happened. 125 years is a lot of knives! But if it did it would be rare (and possibly a counterfeit).

Free knives are the best knives. If I'm looking at the tang stamp right, it appears to be the "younger brother" to mine.

I'll opine that secondary blades in tiny knives are not the greatest idea. Consequently, *220 1/2 TrapperNuts are arguably more practicle Nuts. That said, with my smooth black bone tactical 6220 slipped in a pocket the saquach has not dared to jump out of the dark woods and attack me, not even once.

*220 1/2 is the only pattern number I'm aware of in which 1/2 is part of the pattern number rather than a sufix indicating a clip master blade. 20 1/2 should be added to the list of pattern numbers in the reference section along with Case's official name: TrapperNut.

My only case peanut, I've had this knife seems like forever, I think l got it in a drop, probably in the '80's . We used to do that at work quite often, this was in the shape it's in then, someone abused it, the large blade has no snap to speak of and the small one enough for 10 knives. I've always thought of them as finger nail cleaning knife.

Thanks for showing it BH!! I got mine in my left front pocket again today. That knife of yours will still do alot for you. I keep a little bit bigger traditional in my Right Front Pocket. But most of my chores in the last couple days, I've been able to only use the Peanut. I kinda like them. If I was doing some heavy cutting probably wouldn't use it though. That's when the bigger traditional comes out. The Case 47 or the Case Sowbelly.

A Barlow is about the smallest knife that I carry on a regular basis, I've got a 34ot or two or three that I slip in the watch pocket of my jeans now and again. I doubt that peanut blade on mine would take much pressure as far as cutting something. I think someone used to much pressure and sprung the blade as the back spring is down in the handle,and the tip of the blade peeks a bit and doesn't open all the way. Heres a few that I consider finger nail knives although the butterbean ain't really fit for that.
