You sure seem able to hunt out the good ones

Here's one I got off the auction site awhile back. At the same time, there was an 895 up for auction. I should have tried to snag it as well.

I've carried this one to work a lot over the past several months. It's light as a feather, and of course that clip blade is perfect for slicing meat and fruit at lunch.

Yes... the 825 apparently was a popular pattern... at one time I had three but sold one leaving me with a NOS in its view pack & another used where the previous owner seem to favor the sheepfoot... it's probably already lost 25% due to sharpening & then he ground the top to the point of obliterating the nail nick so that he had to gouge out a new one... guess he felt it sat too proud... but the clip was a lot less used so that the etching is faint but still there.. I. and the spey doesn't look used at all. I picked it up because the sheepfoot intrigued me & it took me awhile to figure out what happened to it.

Oh, those pesky spey blades; I always wish for a pen blade, or, horror of horrors, TWO sheepfoot blades. Well, there are congress knives, I guess.

Well, he fixed that problem, for sure. Still, I'd carry that knife.

Regarding two sheepsfoot blades, I love a good Congress, but that long clip blade sure is handy.

Sorry to post again, but I can't quit laughing at that sheepsfoot blade. With that kind of redneck ingenuity, the previous owner must be kin to me.

I just picked up this Schrade Walden 897UH. Serial # 28390 and no 897UH tang stamp. Been wanting an early hinged box 897 for a while. Also pictured with my Keen Kutter Anniversary 897, serial # 05801 and no tang stamp. I'm curious about when they started stamping them. My other SW 897UH is tang stamped and serial # M5900. A much later production and still before 1973. ???

It even has the white cardboard cover for the box but I didn't picture it. The swedge on the main looks really nice for an old timer. I'd like to do a photo comparison of this with the gec 82, a big slenderino stockman, but I didn't have time today.

As much as I like this one I think an 861 would really be the ticket. In due time I suppose.

I pulled this pic off ebay this morning; I am not going to bid on it, but I wanted to show it. The 896K (the K had originally meant K Horn) was usually and earlier in the SW years sold as a butter and molasses knife, in celluloid. When they went to Delrin that color was (kind of) saved, but inferior and more opaque in looks. But then they also marketed a Delrin version in what I would call 'barn bone.' That is the knife I am showing here. So there were three distinct versions of that knife sold by Schrade, all with the same pattern number.

I think they pulled that one and put it back up with a higher BIN. It showed up twice in my saved search. A good knife but very bland looking in the handle department.


However this one doesn't look so bland.

899?

Yes. The original version. Later they had a sheepsfoot instead of the spey, those were all delrin.

Edit to add:

I went through catalogs to see if I could narrow down the change from the spey to sheepsfoot on the 899. In the 1973 catalog it last shows a spey, in 1974 a sheepsfoot. The sheepsfoot remained in the catalogs until the 899 was last shown in 1986. Now to see if this corroborates with the knives that are out in the wild...

The sheepsfoot would make the knife more useful, to me, but the spey makes it more slim and has style for a spey blade.

The way my ol' dad sharpened this one (and others) it is truly a "Slenderino" knife! The back side of the main blade is marked 896K.

This 895 has been sharpened a mite.

Etched "Our Very Best 1249Y". Notice that there is no U.S.A. in the tang stamp. So... early 1950s? And here is an 896Y, a later Schrade Walden, along with an 890Y.

I really like those slenderino's Cal, but the 890Y!? Color me impressed.
