Mike - what’s the story behind the knife with the black (leather?) handles - 1st picture bottom right?

Beautiful lineup. Thanks, Tom

galvanic1882 wrote: Wed May 10, 2023 4:20 pm Many years ago I bid on a knife on ebay. It was a 3 3/8" closed NYK with gutta percha handles and filework on the liners. The handles were really cool in design. At the time you could see who was bidding on items on ebay and there were a couple of guys that would be hard to beat if they wanted a knife. I was beat out on the knife from one of these guys from Ohio. I ended up staying in touch with him through the years and he is no longer buying on ebay. I have always asked if he would sell the knife to me and he always politely declines. Well one just like it came up for sale and I was able to get it. Love the darn thing, very beefy made knife and only the second one I've ever seen.
I posted it before and here is the write up I did.

thanks Mike - pretty cool little piece - I love that spear, 2 pens and nail file blade configuration.

I had to re-educate myself about Gutta percha being a crystallized latex made from the Palaqiuim gutta tree native to the Malay archipelago had been used for centuries for knife handles among other uses was ‘discovered’ by Europeans in the early 19th century and became very popular as a moldable durable material. It revolutionized communications in being the first material to successfully insulate underwater telegraph cables in the 1850’s. It’s properties as a electrical insulating material led to over harvesting.

Thanks for sharing greater detail - I’m glad you found one for your collection.

Wow very cool Mike thanks for posting that. Is that page from a catalog? If so is the 4 bladed one I posted earlier in it?

Sorry for the late reply, Mike. Yes, from what I think is a later NYK catalog since it's much smaller than the Biddles hardware catalog. I didn't find your four-blade in that catalog.

An unusual curved New York Knife Co. 2 full blade jack, 3 7/8", sheepsfoot secondary. Thanks to Roger Cunningham. Jacks with 2 large blades are uncommom.
