I posted this “hack” in the pets thread, but it dawned on me that some of our outdoorsmen might benefit from this old hound hunter hack.

In the morning, the boys and I are taking Sally (15 month old Blackmouth cur tree dog) out to the woods to see if she can accidentally bump into a squirrel. Young pups out in the field sometimes don’t like to be caught since they’re having so much fun.

You can tie a long check cord to them, but those get tangled in the brush. Soooo, take a long piece of string trimmer line, tie a snap on one end, and hook it to their collar. The trimmer line won’t tangle around brush and when you get close enough, just step on the line. I thought it might be if use if you ever have your dog out in the wilds and they don’t like to come back.

Here’s Sally and the “insurance policy”. As you can see, she ain’t spoiled a bit.

Yea Wakunda the Johhny Cash version is my favorite. But i am here to tell you its easier to get to Hazard than to Harlan. That is for sure dogleg. Thanks redrider. Thats nice bighomer. Frost got all my apples this year or i would be seeing a few deer.

This Broadhead Skink has been hangin out around my patio all summer, thought I may as well take his picture. We see the Five Lined every year, these......not so much.

Great pictures Gents. Love this thread but far behind with all the frequent posts.

My job requires to maintain about 20 sites throughout my huge county in Nevada. Law Enforcement and Fire radios, etc. Requires some toys to there depending on weather, terrain, road conditions with 4WD, Snowcat, UTV with tires or snow tracks. Waiting on helicopter drop they have been telling me about.

Last week, Trident Peak Nevada. 8254 feet and about 3 or 4 thousand feet above valley floor.

Smoke from California fires is horrible. Picture show a very light smoke day

As a side note, the third picture to the right of the sharp peak (Diaster Peak, mid pic on horizon), that range is the Montanas, home to 25 % of the world's lithium deposits. About 60 miles from my house. I hunt and fish that valley.

Sadly that beautiful valley will be decimated in the next few years...

I hope your comments concerning the decimation of this country never come true. On a lighter note, Jerry, it's too steep for an old worm out, Florida flat woods feller to ramble. Be great to ride with you on your vehicles or even tour on the back one of your friends there in the 4th picture.

Thanks Phillip. Sounds like a plan if you are ever in these part. King River Valley is beautiful desert and Outdoorsman Paradise.

Sadly, with 25 % of the world's lithium there, no stopping the money machine and green deal craze. That area and the millions of acres around it are beautiful outdoor areas with hunting, fishing, off roading, hiking and all things outdoors. My favorite part of this large outdoor heavy, sparsely populated county

Interesting note:: there is a thistle that of which 14 acres exist on the planet. GUESS, where it is located?

I am no eco-nut, more of an appreciator of desert beauty and the outdoors,, but that valley is beautiful. It is a travesty.

The road and landscape will soon look like a "Mad Max" sequel with sulfer tankers rolling in. Sure hope it does not but...

The current eco-nuts (that I have zero association with of course) are off the rails.

Guy and crew spearheading it drove 9 hours with 2 gas SUVs and says "humans were engineered to walk and no one needs a car" after he and his buddies just drove 2 cars over 6 or 700 miles to get there.
Make sense to anybody? Not me.

Remember the days when the world continued to turn and people made a comfortable living without higher education. Where I was born and raised, a lot of the generation before me only had an eighth grade education and it didn't stop them from making a living.

It’s been a full morning here on the farm.

We went on a training run this morning, getting the girls ready for November when the leaves fall. Here’s Pepper treeing a squirrell. Sally was all over the tree trying to figure it out, it won’t be long before she’s doing it too. This limb got in her way and she tore it off the tree, lol. Don’t get between pepper and her squirrell!!! Then we had to take feed down to the barn. The goats like Jackson’s truck too!

Wade, when is your season there? Here in Illinois it comes in Aug 1st until Jan. I have never hunted with a dog, but I always go in Aug and Sept when they arent needed because the squirrels arent on the ground. When Oct 1st rolls around, I let the deer hunters have the woods. So, when you knock a squirrel out of the tree, do the dogs also retrieve?

Our season is about the same as yours, it comes in in August and goes through February. Right now you can’t really hunt with the dogs because like you said the squirrels are on the ground much right now and with all the leaves you can’t see them in the tree when the dogs do find them. Right now, we’re just kind of tuning Pepper up and trying to get Sally started. That way, long about the first of November when the leaves are off they’ll be ready to go. We won’t do any serious squirrell hunting until the middle of November when modern gun season for deer goes out.

Usually when your shoot the squirrell out, you’re right there with the dogs. They will go get it, but have to be trained to bring it to you. Their natural inclination is to claim it as their own. lol.

The dogs will tree raccoons too. I have some grain farmer friends who are just about begging for someone to come take out some of the coins that have an exploding population here. So we’re looking forward to getting the girls out at night some this winter too.

You know I lived in Tacoma while my ship was in the yards in Bremerton, WA. and I don't recall ever seeing any Seals in the sound or on the coast. I saw them in Alaska a couple of years ago, but we didn't get close enough to take pictures.
