That's what I want to do! I had a horse when I was a kid, probably didn't appreciate her like I should have. Now I have an ATV. Less temperamental but not nostalgic either.

The theme of the December issue of True West magazine is the Mountain Man. Included is an article on the art of David Wright and his attempt to accurately portray his old west mountain man subjects, including studying the work of artists from the era and living the life himself. He hunts with old flintlock rifles of their day “in freezing weather wearing 18th century wool and brain tanned buckskin leather clothing”, has built his own log cabin, and hunted on horseback and in a birchbark canoe. Interesting fellow and an outstanding artist as you can see from the picture cudgee posted of one of his paintings.

Another interesting thing is the article dispelling “myths of the mountain man”. Contrary to today’s image most did not have “ZZ Top” beards. Instead most were clean shaven or shaved often, the reasons being “to cut down on dirt and lice, and to stay on good terms with Indians”. “Dog Faces” were not welcome in tribal societies, and last but not least “bad hygiene” was a turn off to Native American women. Soap and razors were hot trade items at rendezvous.

All in all another great issue of the magazine.

Hunting with Bow has concluded for us 3 that do that here in the family . Also just received a pic from Nephew Jeremy who’s living in Alaska . He. Left here a few years ago seeking a better way of living and has done well . So here’s a pic of brother Jeff’s Buck he shot Tuesday and Pic of Nephews Caribou .
Looks like I’ll be cooking Turkey for Thanksgiving as everyone else had at least a 20 inch spread .was only 3 inches short but that’s my life story .Especially when you are only 5 ft 7 inches tall

Something about them big bucks... "Unlucky" seems to happen a lot when chasing them with a bow and arrow.

Great looking critters, fellers! I'm an all around fan of the white-tailed deer, love to seem 'em in the woods year round, love to capture them on my game cameras and I also enjoy them at the kitchen table!

Sorry to read about your near miss, Chris. I've never tried bow hunting, but several of the guys who hunt our farm property do and are usually successful.

Yep ,good year of hunting .
Caribou is not too bad ,it really depends on who’s cooking it . It can dry out fast like Venison .

I think Elk tastes the most like beef, in my opinion.

We share that opinion. I had occasion to be in Forsyth, MT 20 some years ago when Elk was on the dinner table. Whole hair of a lot better than venison or Antelope. The Antelope was as dry as a popcorn fart.

There's a bunch of black squirrels running around Arlington and Alexandria. I've been trying to get a picture of one and finally managed to do so on today's coffee walk around Old Town. Pretty changing leaves too, they're dropping quickly now here.
