Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Little Valley N.Y. 1886-1963

The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was started by John Champlin and his son Tint in 1882. It was first incorporated under the name J.B.F. Champlin and Son as a wholesale distribution company based in Little Valley, New York. The business proved to be a successful endeavor, and it soon branched into a knife production company named Cattaraugus.

A recent pick up for me. Pattern is 2216 2C. As you can see, the crack in the center of the cover has actually caused a fracture wherein one half is lifting off the liner. I plan on having it rehandled but will try have it done in antique white pearl kirinite or something similar that is close to the original cell in color.

Thanks for looking,

Chris J.

Chris, that you’re wanting to have it rehandled with a material resembling its original covers is great! Thank you for honoring its original provenance.

Hi Ken:

Thanks for your input--much appreciated. I found a source of kirinite online that has a color called antique white pearl that I think closely resembles these original covers. I'm not sure if other materials might be available that would work, but I think the kirinite may be the way to go.

I agree that’s a good choice, at least knowing what we know at this time. Time will tell. Fifty years from now those who are in possession of our knives may think we were all stupid, just like we judge celluloid today! ::sotb::

Cattaraugus balsa wood "stick boards" used to display knives. Only ones I've ever seen or heard of. You can see where a couple knife points had been stuck in the boards for display.

I posted this Catt on this thread back on Feb 13, 2025. Note the cracked and deteriorating covers, (last 3 pics). Here it is after a sweet re-handle by Herb in antique pearl Kirinite, (first 3 pics). We were striving to have replacement covers similar in appearance to the originals. I'm not big on shields, so I chose not to include one on the new covers. My pics didn't capture the beauty of the new covers very well--may try again tomorrow in different lighting.

Thanks for looking,

Chris J.
